Projector headlights?

I'm wading into the miserable world of LED headlight shopping, but I'm just curious: does any JK have factory projector headlights (halogen or HID)? I recently installed an HID kit with disappointing results -- stadium-quality brightness splashed everywhere. Useless. Sadly I had to modify the wiring to reach the battery so I doubt it's returnable.

I'm guessing it's a generic kit, hence the out-of-curiosity question about projector housings.

No. They're either the crappy old halogens or the optional projector LED's on the newer ones.

If you didn't do a headlight housing retrofit or buy housings designed for those type of bulbs, that explains why the light splashed everywhere even though it's bright as hell.

Lots of people love to swap out the halogen bulbs for HIDs or LEDs without modifying the housing. What most people don't understand (and some refuse to acknowledge even after you explain it to them) is that you can't do that. Different bulb types emit light in different ways and the stock halogen housing isn't meant to compensate for that. That's why, yes you'll get super bright lights, but that light isn't focused and scattered all over the place. You'll see the same effect with the cheap knock-off LED headlights on Amazon, eBAY, etc.

I went down this rabbit hole with my WJ and spent a lot of money, time, and effort only to learn things the hard way.

Just switch to a good aftermarket, plug n' play, LED headlight, or get the Jeep OEM LED headlight. Caution: this is a pricey solution.

My JW Speaker J2s are great. It was a 10 times improvement over my factory headlights.

I second this. Shop around and you'll find good deals and don't be afraid to use price match to your advantage. I managed to score a pair of brand new J.W. Speakers Evo J2 headlights for $399 after finding it priced lower on a random store and having it price-matched by one of the more reputable and trustworthy vendors.

Pricey? Yeah. But it was a pretty decent deal for an otherwise normally expensive product and it was plug and play. No splicing, cutting, retrofitting, etc. plus the light output vs. halogen was nigh and day.

You have a few options besides the J.W. Speakers too. Morimoto, ProComp, Trucklite, KC, Vision X. Even Quadratec sells some that are just rebranded J.W. Speakers for bit cheaper.

I first tried better halogen bulbs than factory in the stock housing (2015 JKU) - helped a little but not much. Did a lot of reading here in the forum and ended up getting a set of the “made for Quadratech by JW Speaker” LED’s - price? Yes. Big improvement and much easier to drive at night now? Damned Skippy yes! These are direct plug-n-play, no extra external modules, no splicing of wires, relays, etc, no having to flash codes related to PWM vs LED circuitry, which was part of why I chose them.

Always happy to hear this sort of thing. I bought the same ones a while back but they're waiting for me at a friend's place so I haven't installed them yet. Looking forward to having them!

I meant projector housings with replaceable bulbs -- which is why I mentioned HID and halogen. But again it was just out of curiosity. I went with ProComp LEDs -- not because I think they're better, but because of the lifetime warranty. (I'm in that crowd that believes they're all mostly the same Chinese junk, you just pay more to pre-buy the replacement, so a lifetime warranty is the best deal.)

Empirical testing would suggest otherwise. The big-name lights perform significantly better than the cheap knockoffs.

As far as projector housings and HID's go... LED's and lasers are the future. Look at all the high-end cars on the market now. They've all gone LED. The expense and complication of HID's was necessary for a while, but it isn't anymore. They're yesterday's tech now.

In regards to that, to my knowledge there are only two stock options: Reflector housings meant for halogen bulbs and the newer LED projector housings that came out near the end run of the JK until they were replaced by the newer JL ones. Neither are meant to house HIDs so you were going to get mixed-poor results had you gone either route there.

For what its worth, some of the brands are actually made in America, not just designed in America but built elsewhere which seems to be the loophole used nowadays if origin matters to you. Lifetime warranty is definitely a plus though.

Also, heads up since you went ProComp, they've been having issues with their high beams getting stuck on. It was bad enough that management from ProComp themselves got whiff of it and became involved. That was the last I heard a couple of months back, haven't been following the situation since, but there's a whole thread dedicated to it on the forum if you want to search for it

Just wanted to keep you informed in case you weren't aware
