Rear differential leak?

Is this a leak? Should I be concerned?

I don’t see any oil on the ground. Just wet on the left side of the box.

Looks like it's just slowly seeping out. Nothing to "worry" about, but I would pull the cover and replace the gasket. When is the last time you replaced the fluid?

It has about 72,000 miles on it I’m the second owner so I don’t know when it was replaced last probably never

That's the beginning of a leak. Mine started like that and then began dripping. At that point, I used it as an opportunity to upgrade the diff cover to a Poison Spyder (Front D44 Cover) and picked up a LubeLocker gasket. I'm 100% sold on LubeLocker now and will get another when I replace the rear. Don't over torque and you'll be good to go.

Thanks I don’t know if I’m capable of changing the back I might have my nephew do it I can so light speakers things like that but that job seems difficult lol

Nope, use the Lubelocker gasket as is. No sealant required.

Use the weight called for in the owners manual, which varies based on your driving conditions (towing, extremely high temps, etc), which are outlined in the manual.

If you have LSD, and you choose synthetic gear oil, you will likely not need the LSD additive. It will be stated on the bottle. I know Valvoline doesn't require the LSD additive. If you use conventional gear oil and have LSD, you'll want to make sure you add the additive to the rear diff. I recommend the Mopar additive vs a third party.

He's right. It's the easiest DIY job you can do. We swapped my gears ages ago and after installing a rear locker it exploded. (Manufacturing defect.) As a result I check and change my diff fluid far more than normal people. LOL. It's a 15 minute process. There are plenty of videos. I second the lube locker and replacing the stock cover. The magnetic dipstick on my ARB cover saved my gears- it kept the gumball size ball of metal shavings from being mashed further in my gears. It also makes it a lot easier to check fluid levels. (Some Jeeps have a fluid level check plug on the stock cover; some don't.) There are a lot of decent options for less than $200.
Just make sure you put your hair in a bun or a ponytail. That smell isn't pleasant.

I use this Valvoline gear lube. It costs around $6 at Autozone. It comes with the limited slip additive already in it too.

Thank you for all the help I got the lube locker also my nephew is doing it for me on my rear the question now is should I change my front also with a new lube locker and oil.

My 2014 has about 72,000 miles on it it’s never been change is it bad to change it now or should I just leave the front also?

One thing to note...if you are going to continue to use the factory diff covers, make sure you break the fill port loose while the cover is on. They use some kind of threadlocker or some goop on it and it is very hard to break loose when they are off.

Ask me how I know. I had to use a propane torch to get it out.

I have since upgraded to after market covers. but heed my advice.

I also use lube lockers....actually the rear is in the box still but haven't had to change out fluid on it in a while. Had to replace front axle seals last summer so it got the lube locker. They are pretty slick. Just don't over torque.

30-40 lbs-ft is the recommended torque spec for the rear differential cover bolts, just FYI.
