Review: Springtail Solutions Gen 2 Tailgate Table/MOLLE panel

I installed the new Gen 2 tailgate table/MOLLE panel from Springtail Solutions in my 2014 JKU Polar Edition and didn't see any threads specifically for the Gen 2 so I wanted to provide a review and spark the conversation.

I never had the Gen 1 table so I can't provide a side-by-side comparison but the main difference seems to be the closure method, whereby the index plungers have been replaced with toggle latches. I've used index plungers before and I believe replacing them with the toggle latches is a valuable upgrade. They operate exactly as Doc describes in his instructions/videos, easy enough to toggle with 1 finger while still holding the table securely closed.

I also appreciate that they mapped out "safe drilling areas" that will avoid the angled supports in the gate for those that want to hard mount the table. I will eventually do this but am using the blind inserts and screws for the time being. I was a bit skeptical about the stability using these plastic inserts but the table seems surprisingly secure.

I'm very impressed with the table and, with the help of Doc's great instructions, installation was as easy as he said it would be. Took me around 30 minutes to put the table together in my living room, with the most time-intensive part being adjusting the paracord to level the table, and another 10 minutes to install (no helper this time).

Powdercoat looks great and the metal is solid, leading me to believe this table will look great and perform well for a long, long time.

Thanks for the review - been looking at one myself. Good information!

Seems your photos didn't post for some reason.

Thanks for the kudos. I'd been looking at them for awhile and finally decided to pull the trigger once they released the Gen 2. I think the wait was worth it.

Pictures are showing for me. Hosted on Imgur if that matters

Thanks man! We really appreciate the kind words. We worked very hard to improve what was already a solid performing table/MOLLE rack. There were many prototypes and a lot of different approaches that we tried until we found the perfect solutions.

To summarize the updates....

New style latches: Gone are the index plungers which worked well for a "slam shut" function but caused frustrations in installation and were not very adjustable.

The new Toggle style latch is super easy to install/assemble and is incrementally adjustable. Not only does it allow for a secure closure but also allows us to get rid of the rubber dampeners to control any rattling. Rated at 220 lbs capacity each....yeah, Overkill.

Pre-drilled holes for permanent mounting options: As you probably know....the JK inner tailgate is maze of angled supports that limits the options for drilling. Basically, if you hit one of these supports...you will likely snap your drill bit and then have to deal with its removal which is usually timely and a PITA.
We have mapped the safe zones for drilling and should have enough room extra room for riv-nuts if you desire. Keep in mind that not all Jeep parts are up to spec....always start small and probe your hole to assure clearance.
There is also the same great No-Drill options as well!

Redesigned Paracord mounts: Para-cord is easier to install....nuf said.

Thicker materials: The backing plate is now 0.105 thick....adds a little weight but is super sturdy.

I've got pics of the prototypes.....my testor should be getting his production unit this week and we can post some nicer pictures later.

NOTE: Production units are Powdercoated BLACK

NOTE #2: Supplies are running a bit thin due to the great response....if we run out, I should be restocked by the 1st week in December.

Great product!

I installed mine in the smoke/dark last night! One of the few accessories we’ve bought that exceeded expectations all around.

The new style latches are nice but my index plungers work well with one hand to close the gen 1 tailgate table. Over two years and no rattles to report.

Yeah....the function of the index plungers was never the big issue. Obviously, they worked well because we have a ton of them out there.

It was the fact that when they were not installed with caution, they broke pretty easily. At a replacement cost with shipping of $14.00 each (we charged $9.00 and ate some of the cost).......the customers who broke them were not happy. Expensive AND Fragile = Headache for everyone involved.

It probably would have served well as some sort of social study on how many instructions, bright red warnings labels and instructional videos can be ignored before something goes dreadfully wrong.

This and a significant number of our customers are international and don't read english... I got in the habit of just sending an extra index plunger with all international orders with the hopes that they would figure it out after they broke the first one.

That looks like a Bond mini shovel.

@Springtail , any chance of a black friday discount/sale for the Gen 2 Table?

Sorry....already discounted 20%

We run continuous sales and don't play into the holiday sales baloney....we figure that if it can be priced low on the day after Thanksgiving, then someone must be charging too much over the rest of the year.

Our prices only tend to vary with the price of components (steel mostly).

I just posted an instructional video on hard mounting one of Springtails racks. Thought I would share it in this thread as well

possibility of permanently mounting a Springtail table to my JK Tailgate. It must have been pretty good timing because he was in the process of cutting apart a JK Tailgate to map all of the inner workings so they could provide an option where there would be preplaced holes that would identify where one could safely drill into the tailgate without hitting the angled inner supports (which will snap a drill bit if you accidentally hit one). Since they don’t have a JK in house anymore, I offered to test out some of the prototypes and help Springtail smooth out any quirks in the prototypes. I have had a few over the summer as Doc has been making adjustments in hole placement and new materials. He listened to my suggestions and I think the final results are pretty nice.
While they were at it, the also beefed up the back plate, improved the function of the table by replacing the index plunger closure with a more conventional fully adjustable clamps (which are way easier to install than the old pulls). Also, they improved the paracord installation by making it easier to install them as well.
I used the rack for a good portion of the summer using the no-drill plastic grommets and found that the no-drill option worked well and had no complaints as it did what it was supposed to. The new clamps worked very well, I did suggest to him that adding a 5mm not and lock washer would be a good addition as the clamp did flip sometimes when the rack was in the down position and I would have to readjust it. He took that advise and added that hardware to the kits as well
In the video below, I showed you how I did the permanent installation using Riv-nuts. The holes are right on for my installation but they do warn that you should always drill with caution since there is no guarantee that every tailgate will be up to spec. Overall it is pretty easy for those who prefer the idea of a permanent mount.
I like the way new Gen 2 rack/table functions. The new clamps are very secure, it is completely silent with no rattles or squeaks. It’s a great addition to my JK. The price did go up a little bit from the old table but Doc says that is due to the crazy jumps in the cost of steel lately. Still a pretty good deal in comparison with some of the other racks on the market. The quality is top notch and I like the fact that it is American made! Check it out.

Ship to Canada?
Also, can this be installed without drilling? Looking at the website for it (JK Rear Door Folding Tray/MOLLE Panel GEN 2) it talks about it, but just wanted to confirm!

I've got a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, will this fit?

Sure can. It's designed to be drill-free installation but you always have the option of drilling to secure it even more. I'll be doing that this summer once it warms up a bit.

Should fit no problem. I have a '14 JKU Polar Edition, which is technically a Sahara, so yours should be fine.

So I went to go look at the jeep to see how I would attach it. Most of the links I read talk about stock drill holes, but i'm quite sure how I would attach one. Are there stock holes behind the main panel that a professional could drill into? My door doesn't look the same as other i've seen when they post pictures of their set up. Any advice?

Designed to be a NO-DRILL installation for '16 JK. I didn't have any hesitation for drilling. Four holes were drilled for 4 rivet nutserts. Plus I SHIFTED the entire assembly 2" to the left towards the tail gate hinge. For the bottom row I used the supplied fasteners. The 4 rivet nutserts across the top row ensured the GEN 1 tail gate table is super secured.

I’m interested in the rubber holders you have for the flashlight, axe, etc.

What is that device called? Who makes it?

Thanks.

Ah. Okay. Thanks.

I saw the quickfist product at Springtail's site but I wasn't really clear what purpose they served.

Again, thanks!

My wife and I spent a solid 2 months looking, researching, debating, and more researching to find a table to suit our needs. We were pretty set on not having to drill any holes or modify the tailgate in any way. I was searching through the old youtubes one day and stumbled across a few videos with reviews over the Springtail Solutions MPAC table. I watched lord knows how many of them, and my wife was set when she learned we didn't need to drill to mount the table. We purchased it and have had no regrets with it yet. I only thought to snap a pic the last time we were at the Badlands in Attica, Indiana when we used it to help us air up after a fun time playing. We have used it as a place to cook and prep when camping, set cleaning supplies down when we are cleaning our Jeep, or put some tools on it when we are working on it. I have absolutely no complaints with it, and am completely satisfied with it. The gen2 is perfect, and it does not rattle at all, which seems to be a large complaint of so many other brands of table. I couldn't think of a better way to spend that money, than something so versatile and useful for our needs.
