Shifting the transfer case

Well, he had our first try at towing our '17 JKU behind our motorhome and I've got a question: how the heck do we shift the transfer case out of neutral? I'm afraid I'm going to bend, or break, the shift lever! The manual says that it should be shifted before starting the engine, but the only way I could shift it was to start the engine and listen to the gear grinding - what am I doing wrong?

When done towing release the tension on the tow bar, then try to shift the transfer case. If it will not shift start the engine, shut it off and try again. If still no joy you will have to rock the vehicle to see if you can move the shifter, do not force anything - it will eventually go into gear.

Yeah, it's a great video. I don't even bother with the driving forward stuff anymore. I switch at a dead stop all the time now. It's just a matter of spinning the gears with a bounce, waiting till they stop and giving it a try. Keep doing it and sooner or later the gears will stop at a meshing point at which time the lever will drop right in. No grinding, no forcing....
