Side Marker Lights

Might be a dumb question from a newbie, but gotta ask………..

Putting on flat fenders, what are thoughts on side marker lights? Are they needed to be legal? I have seen some people zip tie them in the wheel well. Personally, not a big fan but if I must to be legal I will.

Any other solutions?

I don't think they're required, but it may vary by State, so check your laws...

I JUST went through this myself, and though the "zip tie to wheel well" solution looked...well..like %R*@ honestly, so I did made my own with nice small 3/4" bullet LEDs.. They're cheap, small, and pretty discrete. I cut off the old wires, soldered the connector to the LED's and plugged them in. Easy...

Thanks Legobusier. I saw these type of bullet lights on 4wp for like $17 bucks. I was thinking of trying to use the old plastic inner fender liner and building a little box out of it to fit between fender and fender support bracket and installing similar light to move them outboard a little. But question if it is even worth the hassle or just cap the wiring and forget about them. Guess I need to dig into the IL law a bit further to make my decision on how much time and energy this is worth!

I got 10 of them on Amazon for about $9 - mounted directly into plastic fender liner. Very easy install..

theres so many cars on the roads with no sidemarkers.. absence of that light on our jeeps should be a non issue imo.. i dont have sidemarker lights at all since installing flat flares... (knock on wood)

It's required in some states, Virginia, for example, you're required to have some kind of side marker to pass the annual safety inspection.

Doesn't have to be pretty, but it has to be there and working.

I hate our VA rules. I know they are required, but I also want to say they must be stamped SAE or similar...I'm not sure any old light will pass inspection.

An internet search for "Laws, side marker lights automobile" seems to indicate that the lights are required by law since 1968.

Hey there,

There are some flares that have the side marker lights already included with them so you do not have to worry about installing them.

Here are a few options:

Rugged Ridge 11640.10 Hurricane Flat Fender Flares

https://www.quadratec.com/products/12510_5210_07.htm

Bushwacker 10919-07 Flat Style Flares

https://www.quadratec.com/products/12506_4442_07.htm

DV8 Offroad FENDB-06 Slim Fenders

https://www.quadratec.com/p/dv8-offroad/slim-fenders-07-17-jeep-wrangler-jk

Here are all of the options that we offer however for the flat flares:

https://www.quadratec.com/categories/jeep_body_frame/fender_flares/fender-flare-kits?kw=flat%20flares

Just be sure to choose your Jeep from the drop down menu.

Have a great day!
Hailey

The thing I didn't like about the fenders with built-in LEDs is that the LEDs can't be replaced -- and this is Chinese manufacturing we're talking about here, assuming 30 cents worth of LEDs will last forever represents quite a big gamble on several hundred bucks worth of fenders.

The ones on the bushwhackers are replaceable.

Exactly my point.

I suppose I should have written "most" aren't replaceable, having just shopped for reasonably-priced metal fenders only maybe two months ago. (I guess the Hurricanes are plastic, so I didn't see those -- if I (vaguely) remember right, I don't think QT has any metal options with replaceable LEDs, or maybe just the fancy four-digit-price versions.)

Regardless, even cheap fenders are fair chunk of change, seems stupid anyone would design them with any type of lighting that can't be replaced.

quite a few inner fender liners come with a hole to install side markers. looks a LOT better with liners anyway, and the LED's are cheap.

Yeah that's what I did, Artec liners and for something like $9 I got a set of six lights (with four bright LEDs per light), made a little bracket and mounted them behind the liners.
