Steering column rattle/noise

So I got this new 2016 Jeep Wrangler, 2400 miles so far and when I go through some bumps/potholes I hear noise or a rattle by the steering column. Some Wrangler owners have told me it's common on these trucks and not to worry about it. Is this true that it's a normal thing or should I bring it to the service dept?

No rattle is normal.

I had one that drove me crazy when my rig was brand new and took a few months to track down. For me it was a loose bolt up around the passengers sun visor. It was so loose I could turn it by hand. I tightened it up and haven't had the rattle since.

It can be difficult to track rattles down, but yeah if you can't figure out where it's coming from then perhaps you should take it in and see if a tech has any ideas.

One other note, since these columns have the tilt feature did you check to make sure the lever used to tilt the wheel is nice and secure?...Just an idea off the top of my head.

I know what your talking about, it really is not a rattle, but the whole steering column shuddering when hitting large bumps. I believe that is normal and mine does it too...

Has anyone found a fix for this? My 2016 is doing the same thing.. shuddering / rattle of entire steering column over bumps. Not too bad in the city but drives me insane when off roading or even on just a bumpy road.

Honestly, it's hard to fix that, seems like all wranglers have it.

Check out this video by CPO, during the 0:40 to 0:55 mark you can hear it...

Check to make sure it is not the brake pedal rattling. The brake pedal can be very loose and it seems like it is coming from the steering column.

I've had the brake pedal "rattle" in every one of my six JKs; it seems to be a design trait.

I noticed it is most pronounced when you hit a bump in a steep descent, but it will also rattle when you hit a big bump on a level surface.

I don't pay attention to it any more. I've learned to live it.

There's one potential easy fix. Find the rubber grommet where the column passes into the fire wall. Take a short wooden dowel (1/2") and with a hammer lightly tap it to seat it into the opening. Just a few light taps and the rattle stopped for me.

So after reading your replies i decided to test it again this time stepping on the brake while I go through bumps or bumpy roads and while I'm applying some pressure to the pedal the shuddering stops and I can feel a little vibration on the pedal itself. So I'm guessing it is the brake pedal the problem here?

OMG!!! After going crazy, bringing the car to a dealer who heard the rattle and had no luck diagnosing / trouble-shooting it, I tried placing my foot under the brake pedal and pulled it toward me with just slight pressure while going over large bumps, and presto.....THE RATTLE DISAPPEARED!!

Now that I know what it is, will try going back to have the dealer correct the problem!!

Thanks for the tip!!

I found my rattle.. mine is the friggin ignition key cylinder...

If it's not your brake pedal, grab your key and hold on to it while driving over a rough or weather damaged road..

Confirmed on mine if I grab the keys when traveling over a weather beaten road the rattling stops. But, its not the keys, its the tumblers rattling inside the ignition cylinder.

Dealer will need to install a new ignition switch...

Steering column rattle/noise

That was mine, too. Dealer refused to replace it, saying "they all do that".

However, I solved it quite a while back on my own.

Take the plastic covers off the steering column, and apply a little thick white lithium grease between the rotating assembly and the housing (not the chrome bit, further back in the lock cylinder) with a dental pic or similar. Use the paste, not spray. It's thick and gummy enough to keep it from chattering, and it doesn't take much.

Mines now been silent for 6+ mos.
