Toyota Builds An All-Terrain Minivan

Does it come with a soft top?

For being the world’s largest and most profitable automaker, Toyota rarely flexes its creative muscles. This week, at an event to herald its upcoming North American headquarters in Texas, it let loose, briefly, with this — the wildest Sienna minivan ever to emerge from the factory.

Built on the chassis of the Toyota Tacoma, the Toyota Ultimate Utility Vehicle (TUUV) is … well, a Sienna mated to a Tacoma, part of a promotional cross-country drive. Aside from that, Toyota said nothing else, saying it was saving the rest of the details for the SEMA auto parts show in October. We can tell that beyond just dropping a matte-finish body shell on a frame, the Taco has some off-road enhancements (bead-locking wheels, beefier suspension) and of course a few extras in that winch-bearing bumper.

Sadly, the chances of this being anything but a one-off are zero. But SEMA vehicles have a habit of eventually hitting classic-car auctions — and if that’s too rich, at least it shows America’s army of creative car builders what their next project should be.

Am I the only one who really likes matte black on cars? Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough, but I've never seen matte black as a color option on any car.

If they could do a foldable bed in there, that would be great.

I wish they would have made the FJ Cruiser with a removable top and doors.

Toyota loves to create absurdities like this. It's their self-absorbed idea of "fun".

At least Jeep teases us with concepts that have a chance to see production.

The chances of Toyota building anything like that are slimmer than its chances of being able to design a good looking car.

PS: I saw a lifted Scion on the Toyota campus once too; the rear wheels didn't even drive.

That can't be a sliding door as the rear fenders would be in the way.

Since it's a one off I'm guessing that the rear doors don't open.

Matte paint in general is high maintenance and black is the highest maintenance of them all. Jeep offered a matte green on YJ called Sage Green. I had one and cherished the olive drab appearance but it was a pain compared to standard glossy finishes. Vinyl is a better choice for matte finish unless you have your paint shop.

Regarding the Toyota van, it has now become obvious why they cancelled the FJ production ...

Tho not my cup of tea i will say that is the ONLY minivan i would be caught driving the kids to soccer or to the mall. It is amazing what a couple of engineers, few sips of saki and a joint will produce . Kinda what god did when he/she designed the PlaterPuss lol

I guarantee that if they went to the lengths it took to build this thing that they open. Likely that the door swings way out then slides back.

It's still a minivan, but if I ever HAD to own one this would be the one haha. Gotta love Toyota for this haha.

Only thing I'll say is that it better not be the Tacoma 4.0 cause with as large as this thing is.. It won't have any balls at all. But I'm sure if it is the 4.0 then it's beefed up significantly
