Trade-in Dual Top - To keep or not to keep the soft top

Looking at trading in my '17 JKU Willys in the near future and i'm mulling my options.

I have the dual top group (black hard top and the upgraded soft top).

Does anyone have any advice or experience on this? i could include the soft top and maybe get a few $$ more on the trade (not sure how likely this is when they look it up in their black book of auction values)

Or i could keep one of the tops and try and sell it locally (costs me time and effort, especially if i sell the hard top, would have to store it until sold).

Just trying to see if its worth the effort to swap tops (hard top on now) and keep the hard top, keep the soft top, or throw the soft top in the back and push for more $$$ on trade.

With the winter season upon us the hard top could become a quick seller

Personally, I would think trade value would be better with the hard top on. I would sell the soft top. If your time is so valuable that you don't want to mess with selling it, let it go with the Jeep and be happy with what they value it at.

I'm not sure if you'd get extra value for the dual tops on the trade in. If it was me I'd keep the soft top and flog it off on craigslist. If you put the right price on it'll sell in the first couple of days. Not much effort or expense there. Where are you located? I might come and buy it. Save you the hassle of craigslist!

KBB shows a $777 increase in TI for a HT over a ST. Similarly NADA shows a $750 increase in TI for the HT over a ST. Neither offers the option of showing the dual top group.

If you decide to sell the soft top separately, make sure you have all the parts together for the top as you will get more that way. IIRC, the dual top option comes with the brackets for the frame pre-installed on the sport bar. You will need to remove them and include them with the ST. Be sure to mention in the listing that it includes all the parts including those hard to find brackets (and the screws).

Hard tops tend to do better during the hurricane season. NOAA is predicting a "near-normal” hurricane season in 2019...another selling point.

I'm always on Craigslist. A dual package soft top is the premium top (I actually bought one of these off Craigslist) and is a nice top. Figure you'll get $500 with all the hardware. The hard top will likely bring $1000.

Figure in your own hassle factor. It is certainly easier to manage keeping the soft top, and any buyer can carry it and put it into their Jeep. Not so easy with selling a hard top.

I guess I've convinced myself here that trading with the hard top, getting $750 for that and then selling the soft top for about $500 is your easiest, lowest hassle way to go about it. Don't give two tops for the dealer, yielding $zero for the included soft top.

An easy way to tell if it is worth your while including the soft top is to negotiate your trade-in minus the soft top, and then after reaching what seems to be your most equitable price, then offering to throw it in- see at that point if adding the soft top does anything to improve the bottom line on the deal...if not, it is an easy $500-$600 in your pocket selling it on craigslist. Spring/summer is the best time to sell a soft top.

Leave the hardtop on it, trade both tops in. Are you trading for a JL? Mounting may not be the same.

I was shopping Gladiators, so nothing would be usable/worth keeping.

Do NOT trade-in with both tops. You won't get what you can sell it for privately. I would keep the soft top to sell mainly because it's easier to store/move.

Depending on where you are soft tops in new condition can for up to $1000.
jeepers29 and ScaldedDog like this.

Trade it with the hard top and keep the soft top and sell it on CL. You will probably not get any additional money for it from the dealership.

Since you bought it with the dual top group, trade it with the dual top group.

I have similar situation with having an unused soft top/still new for my 2012 JK in original cartons. I am still on the fence about selling it, but reading the posts is very helpful. Can't see any chance I will ever use it and as one the the guys said, the dealers are not very generous at trade in time. 2012 JK Cosmos Blue Sahara 2 door.

Trade with Hard Top.

Sell Soft Top on Craigslist or FB Market Place.

I suspect you would get very little to nothing extra on the trade of both. You'll get more for sure selling it separately and you'll help out a fellow Jeeper.

I vote opposite. You won’t get much value for a used soft top compared to a used Hard top. Trade with the soft top and sell the ht for $1000 on CL.

Post both tops for sale on whatever platform you use. Whichever one doesn't sell first leave on the jeep to trade it in.
