The weather said 5% chance of rain. FIVE PERCENT. It doesn't rain here in CT until they say 30%. So, I left the freedom panels off. And what happens? Of course...it rained. For 30 mins. I woke up to the sound of the torrential downpour. I ran out and covered it as quick as I could....but now my very expensive Alpine ILX-207 is a friggin brick. Seriously? It can't handle even a little bit of rain?? UGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

And I have ZERO money to replace this. So I'm just stereoless now. F me.

Not sure what your insurance deducible is but I carry $100 comp mainly just for windshields. Might check into a claim if you have a low deductible...

Five percent chance of rain means that 5% of the area is likely to receive rain. Your misfortune was to be in that 5% area.

It's actually dumber than that. My best friend was a meteorologist in the Navy. Apparently there are several different systems and it's literally just the preference of the news source or even individual forecasters. There's the area thing, another is population percentage, there's one more that I forget, and finally, there's the one most people expect, which is the actual chance it'll rain at all, somewhere in the area.

Apparently not even the Navy has a standard system (or at least when he was weatherguessing for a living, which is getting close to 20 years ago now).

Crazy.

Oh and the rice thing can work. I once crashed a $1000-ish drone into our pool (it was a racing drone that could hit maybe 70 MPH and the crash was a side-effect of not flying it through a window, we used to do laps around the house and I turned a little too soon). I disassembled it and threw all the boards and ESCs and motors into a giant tub of rice for a few days and it lived to fly again.

BTW, in many places, including Virginia where I live, headphones are illegal for the driver in a moving vehicle. They prevent you from hearing emergency vehicles coming at you. I just taught an EVOC course this past weekend, and that was one slide in the PowerPoint.

Watch a different channel for news.

FWIW, weather forecasting is much better these days than a decade ago. Five day forecasts are as accurate now as one day forecasts were back then.
I used to be a contractor for the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables and stay in touch with several meteorologists.

My favorite is Jennifer Valdez, CBS-46 Atlanta. ...cause she's good and she's cute....

And yes. Cute counts in meteorology. Counts a lot.

I actually called Alpine. They said its most likely shot. I asked my local install guy about the rice thing. He said phones have a special coating and thatís why that process works. Car stereos do not. Blah!!

I'd still try it. Take it out, blow a fan at it for a few days.

Well the radio is $1K so you'd get $500 from insurance.. Use that $500 to buy a stock takeout from someone or a cheaper aftermarket radio...

Most times a comp claim that small won't effect insurance unless you have a ton of claims..

Good luck!

I dropped a digital camera in a puddle once. All the buttons stopped working. I rolled up all the windows of a car I own and parked it in the summer sun. (The temperature was in the 80's that day). I left the camera on the seat all day with the sun shining on it.

The heat drove out all the water and it started working again.

I realize that the horse is out of the barn now, but something like this is cheap insurance to protect you from unexpected rain when leaving your Jeep out... https://www.quadratec.com/products/11186_4004_07.htm

The buttons took the hit. They operate at five volts or less so you most likely didn't blow anything. Take it out and tip it face down in a big vat of rice (with a lid) and give it 3 or 4 days. Don't apply any more power to it though. The more times you power it up the more likely you are to do permanent damage.

Your local install guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Rice absorbs moisture. It has nothing to do with a special coating on phones.

The rice trick may not revive the head unit, but the rice will absorb the moisture.

To be sure he didnít say anything about rice not working. He said it works with phones because theyíre designed to deal with a bit of water. Car stereos apparently arenít. I was surprised by this because I was told this particular head unit was designed specifically for Jeeps. I assumed (incorrectly it seems) they they would deal with a bit of moisture or an occasional downpour.

They clean electronics, at the factory, with DI water. Its not really the water that's the problem, but stuff that might be in the water. As the water evaporates, it leaves this stuff behind.

Rice is a drying agent (like those "do not eat" silica gel packs you find sometimes in the box), but doesn't do squat with removing that bad stuff either.

Living in CT, I bet there is all sorts of bad stuff in your rain.

As @WaltA said, the rain-splooge tends to be conductive and can cause a short here and there.
Compressed air might liberate the splooge ---- and then when it dries, maybe there won't be shorts.

Still worth a try.

Find someone giving away a stock unit, no sense making an insurance claim and maybe affecting your rates.

The rice thing has worked for me.

I found an ilx-207 on eBay that has a crack in the bezel. I may try to save up and order that ($250) and see if I can switch out the bezel. Or maybe just ignore the crack as itís on the bottom and wonít be seen.

I actually envy the fact that you can leave your Freedom Panels off in your neighborhood overnight. You're just asking for trouble doing that where I'm at.

I hope everything gets solved though and can be easily remedied or replaced. These things happen.
