Well This Sucks

Coming home from work yesterday, the Jeep started running rough about a half mile or less from a Valero gas station. Filled up and headed home and it ran rough all the way home. This morning I went to leave for the dealership to take advantage of the warranty and it would crank but not start. The weirdest thing was the key would stay in the crank position without my hand being on the key. So now I am waiting for a tow truck to take it to the dealer and I decided to let ya'll know about this and possibly anyone that may have had a similar thing happen to them. My Jeep is a 2015 JKU Sahara w/ 3.6 and auto tranny.

UPDATE: Got it to the dealer, finally after waiting for the tow truck for nearly six hours. Yeah, the perils of dealing with warranty companies. Anyway, once I got to the dealer, as soon as I told the service rep the problem, he asked me when I last got gas, answer - yesterday. He asked where, answer - Montgomery. He asked what station and I told him. Come to find out the station manager shut the pumps down less than 10 minutes after I filled up because, DIESEL in the gas tanks. So, I spent $46 bucks for diesel I can't use. The best part is the chain is paying for everything to be repaired including my time away from work. Problem with being paid for missing work is I am salary so I get paid anyway and it's not ethical to take their money for that. I am currently almost done getting the paperwork together for the claim and can't wait to get the Jeep back.

The wife's 2015 did something similar, without the no-start. Turned out to be a flaky fuel injector, covered under warranty. Not sure what to think about the key staying in the start position though.

Faulty ignition switch isn't too tough to swallow.
My '08 had to have switches replaced; blinkers wouldn't shut off, lights turned themselves on.

If you had to use vacation time or one of your personal days, I would charge them. I see no problem with that. Glad to hear the jeep will be coming home soon.

That happened to some of my friends ---- we were riding motorcycles from Jacksonville to Miami, me on a Kawi Concours and everyone else on Goldwings. The 'Wings needed gas, got some diesel, and started farting black fumes. The mix ratio wasn't enough to stop them but it didn't do them any good.
I was so grateful for my 7.5 gallon tank and better mpgs.

According to the estimate they are going to do the following:
Clean the tank & replace the pump
Replace spark plugs
Flush injectors and lines
Replace catalyst O2 sensors
Replace cats
Replace Upstream O2 sensors
Replace Downstream O2 sensors

The rep told me they were going to pay for anything because "it was our fault this happened". I forgot to ask about the rental reimbursement so I included it anyway. All they can say is no and then I will raise hell. As of this morning, I am looking at a almost $4900 for the claim.

I was on the fence and decided that if they denied the rental, I would hit em with the wages/ lost vacation day. Ultimately, I included both. Good advice by the way.

All my friends got from the Port St Lucie/Ft Pierce service plaza station was, "ooops".

Not sure of the OP Jeep's year, but this is possibly due to the Jeeps Tip Start system. The key in the "start/crank" position as we think of it does nothing but tell the computer to start the jeep. Try this - just flick it up to that position...if it continues to crank, you've got Tip start..if not...you don't.

It was running rough before you got to the Valero and filled up? What did you attribute that to?

Running very empty. Probably picked up some trash from the bottom of the tank. Your guess is a good as anyone's.

Spoke with their insurance adjuster yesterday and she told me there were a total of 19 vehicles involved in this one with two of us with Jeeps at the same dealership and with the same service writer. She has paid the $46 originally spent on the gas and I'm waiting for the rest of it so repairs can begin.

Good luck with the repairs, it should be GTG when they're done.

I would be fatal if it were gas going into a diesel engine. All kinds of problems in and out of the engine and fuel system that way.

Finally making progress with repairs and reimbursement. So far I have reimbursed the cost of the original fuel of $46, which if you think about it is a really deal for almost 19 gallons of diesel. They also paid for my vacation day I had to take and will pay $37 a day until today. Which kindof sucks since the day rate is $38.99 and I don't get my Jeep back until Wednesday mid day. The invoice will go directly to them and then I can drive again and not in the little bitty rental that it is very hard for me to get in and out of. Anyway, the ordeal is almost done. As of last Friday, the lady told me there were 29 cases and they expect more once people realize what happened.

So what happens to the driver that delivered and loaded the wrong fuel? I bet he/she is looking for a new job.

I'd bet the driver will soon be flipping burgers and serving up indigestion to people instead of vehicles.

You were inconvenienced by the diesel fuel in the gas. Accept the payment for your time.

The reason the Jeep ran initially is that the "fuel" in the tank was a mix of diesel and gasoline. It had enough flash to actually burn in the engine, but poorly. However, over night the two fuels separated with diesel being heavier than gasoline. So, when he attempted to start the Jeep, he was getting almost pure diesel from the bottom of the tank where the fuel pump intake is.

It Is Home

Got the Jeep home last Wednesday afternoon. Runs like a scalded dog. Their insurance paid for everything but $1.99 a day for car rental so technically I was out about $18 bucks. Final repair invoice was $4482 and as of my final discussion with the insurance lady, there were over 40 cases from this station.
All is good now so I am happy.
