Where did you get your wheels?

As a new Jeep owner, I'll start a thread that's probably been started a million times. I'm looking for 5 black 16 inch wheels for my 2012. Used is fine, and stock wheels are fine too. I'm not really looking for rockstars or some brand wheel. I am a cheap skate. So I don't actually care where you got your wheels, unless you got them for a good deal. I've been checking marketplace and craigslist regularly. I got my wife a Jeep, and now my wallet will feel the pain. Her 1st request is black wheels.

What wheels are on it now? The cheapest way to get black wheels is a couple cans of paint and a couple hours of your time.

I am on stock 17s now. I thought if I go smaller on wheels I will save money over time on tires. After she gets black wheels she wants aggressive looking tires.

What type of paint did you use? I feel like it would chip easily on the wheels. Your wheels do look great though.

I've seen a ton of regular (chrome/silver) looking wheels on craigslist. Maybe I could get a set of those and paint em.

I actually used Plastidip so I could remove it if I didn't like it and figured I would have to repaint them if I wanted to keep them black, but it has held up well for 6 years and 60k miles now and easy to touch up if an area started to peel.

If buying wheels used, make sure they are not only the right lug pattern, but also the correct width and backspace, which will be dependent on the tire size you intend to put on them. 17" plus wheels are more common on JK's though some insist on 15's, but they typically have to be steel and there can still be caliper clearance issues with them.

I'll def look into the plastidip. Yeah, I wanted to do 15s but because of clearance issues with some wheels, I didn't want to chance it. Also, I've read with 15's and the backspacing, the tires will stick out past the fender. In PA thats illegal, and in tiny towns in the middle of nowhere, where I live, cops will pull you over every time they see it.

I don't remember exactly. Think it was 3 or 4 cans. I taped off the tires and did several light coats. It seemed the more coats the better.

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll get myself a set of 5 cheap jeep alloy wheels on craigslist and use this on them.

I did that when I first got my Jeep worked great super easy. Just make sure the wheels are dry!

Hey there,

We have many different options for black wheels.

https://www.quadratec.com/categories/jeep_wheels/alloy_wheels

I would not recommend going with a 16 for her JK without wheel spacers because it will hit the caliper.

Have a great day,
Hailey

The 2012 came stock with 16 inch wheels. Some were 16 others were 17. I'm just going to get some stock 16s. I'm not spending money on new OEM wheels. To expensive. There's to many people selling their stocks for 150 or less. Some plastidip and be done with it.
Thanks though

If not plastidip another thing I have read on here a lot is to do spray on black bed liner. I think you get more of a mat finish with those.

Think you will find that 17" wheels will afford you more selection and better pricing than 16's in most cases. Might find some deals but there are WAY more choices in 17's than 16's now. AND factory takeoff 17" sport wheels are WAY cheap. Actually I got a set of 5 with pretty much brand new tires for nothing(well it was a friend deal) but they are almost that cheap.

Those stock 16x7 wheels have a backspacing of 5.75 if you go with any wider of a tire than absolute stock it will rub on the lower control arm. As long as it has at least 5.2 or smaller backspacing you can run a wider tire. Or you can use wheel spacers.

Generally a tire size 16 will be more expensive than a 17.

If you currently have the 17s I would recommend just painting them as that would be the cheapest way to go.

Thank you,
Hailey

If she likes the wheel design of her stock ones, paint those. Cheapest option. Don't even need new tires.

I'd also check the tire sites for the size you'd be looking for. When I was looking for wheels a while back for a mustang, I noticed that there were far less brands available for passenger car tires on 16s than on 17s. More brands equals more opportunity for sales. Size I needed was also cheaper in 17. Dont know if jeep tire sizes would be the same story.

Good luck. Post a picture of what you end up doing.

No way! I've been buying 17s for way to long. I went down to a 15 on my truck, my wifes car I went to a 16. Smaller tire is waaaaay cheaper.

I'm not sure where everyone is looking at, but the tires I've been buying have been more expensive the larger the rim size. Ever since I've been buying tires it's been that way. I'm not going to run a wider wheel. I guess I should've been more specific. I want the biggest tire I can get for the cheapest price I can get, without going to bigger wheels lifts ect. I'm trying to keep this pretty close to stock, but just want cheaper tires.

If you ever want to install a big brake kit you can forget about the 16in wheels because there won't be enough clearance.

I’ve found it difficult to beat the pricing offered by Discount Tire for anything they carry. I’d finally decided on the wheel I liked and was working with Discount Tire on pricing as well as for tires.
My wife saw a picture of the Quadratec Hardrock wheels and really liked them. Since the Hardrocks area Quadratec-only item, I directly contacted them. As always, I was pleased with their service – they too are a tough outfit to beat.

Agreed, Discount Tire can have some great sales. Last memorial Day they had a sale I could not pass up. Don't remember exact price, but my 5 wheels and 285 70 17 tires were cheaper than my cousin payed for just 5 tires, he did go one size bigger 285 75 17.

Discount does a great job. I got my 37 x 13.5 x 17 at discount tire a few weeks ago for right around $220 each after the sale they were on and Cooper rebate. there are deals to be had. Just have to look for them.

FWIW, nothing wrong with 16" wheels but might be tough to find in the 5 x 5 bolt pattern on the secondary market as not many people run them. You'll find that most folks run 17's on JK's.
