Which Backup Camera?

I'd like to finally install a backup camera in my 2015 JKU HR, but after a short search I'm seeing prices still around $700. Aren't there less expensive kits by now?

Sure there are- depending on whether you have an OEM nav unit (430N?) or an aftermarket one, you can add a simple eBay harness and camera for as little as $100, or you can get a kit from a decent manufacturer that includes all the wiring, a quality camera and a bracket that fits in the rear spare for a good bit more. Factor in having the dealer flash the Jeep to enable video on a 430N, or add a module that will flash your vehicle to the price of the kit.

This one is from a reputable supplier:

^^ it includes a module that will flash the Jeep so video shows on OEM nav. There is a kit without should you want the dealer to do it, or you have an aftermarket screen. There is also a phone app that can DIY the same flash aka sales code the dealer would apply via StarScan, and it runs about $50 not including the USB to OBDII cable.

For $700 I would get a whole new Pioneer 4200NEX (or newer) head unit and backup camera. No need to go to the dealer. There are tutorials here on how to swap it out and what parts you need. If I can do it anyone can...

Like @basicxj says, if you have a 430 already you can do this easily.

You need an alpine interface cable, backup camera (amazon has decent ones for a great price), and a mount. I used a Quadratec spare tire bracket.

To activate I recommend you buy ODB JScan and a Bluetooth dongle so you can activate the camera yourself. JScan opens up a whole new world for you too.

We must be getting close to 300 threads here about rear cameras. There is a lot of really good info most of those other threads, including recommendations and "how to" installation pics. I would strongly suggest taking the time to read thru those.

I'll point you to one of my posts. One of the pics seem to have expired, but the links to suggested products are still working. I would definitely check those out.

As previously suggested, I would recommend looking into the smart phone app of Jscan to activate the rear camera feature on your factory head unit, rather then possibly spending a small fortune having your dealer do it.

I have the 730N.

WaltA, I hear what you are saying and I would normally say the same thing. However, I want current information and don't have all day to read through the tons of posts. I just want an inexpensive rear camera kit, that has the backup lines for parking. Something I can install myself.

I know about searching through all the 'historical' threads. I'll pass along what I found and what I did.
  • You need a 430 or better radio ( you are good there).
  • A spare tire mount bracket is the simplest approach.
  • Amazon has decent cameras for great prices.
  • Alpine makes an interface cable
  • Decide whether or not you want to power it only when in reverse or all the time.

I purchased the spare tire bracket, and Alpine interface cable from Quadratec. The camera from amazon. Most of them have options for front/rear facing, lines or no lines. There are usually small colored wires to clip to achieve your desired setup.

Check out this post in my build thread.

It is a very simple install. Took longer to run the wires to the dash, then it did to hook up the camera.
