which tire size to use

I have read that most tires are shorter mounted than they are advertised and most lifts are recommended up to a certain tire size so I was wondering if the lift manufacturer is referring to the unmounted or mounted diameter? For gears both height and weight seem to be a factor so I'm assuming it's best just to go with the larger number.

Typically unmounted. If they say it's good for 35" tires they mean 35" on paper which is generally closer to 34" mounted with weight on them.
