why amazon is winning

I try to avoid buying off amazon and I would rather help out others, and supports this sites sponsors. Well back around March 1st, I ordered a set of rims and tires, and several other things that where suppose to be in stock, rims and tires where 4 weeks backorder, from a site sponsor. Well everything I orders was put on back order not just the rims and tires. Over the course of the last 2 months I have little by little canceled parts of this order and just bought throw amazon and have received within 2 days. The rims and tires I ordered are available on amazon, but I like the idea them coming already mounted. Has anyone used amazon for tire and rim purchases? After 2 months and no tires and rims, makes me think this company doesn't have a good reputation with it vendors.

Most sellers in the aftermarket automotive world ship direct from the manufacturers. Only a few of the dealers stock much of the components on their website. The big guys like 4 Wheel Parts have regional warehouses that their stores order from. The local stores have some of the most common items, but the rest comes from their warehouse.

I've been pretty lucky and I prefer to communicate with the vendor prior to purchasing, that way I give them a chance to check stock before placing an order. Places like Allen's Offroad gives a very personalized service, I like that. @AOR

I can tell you, my single worst JK parts experience was with Amazon on the first lift kit I ordered for my current JK. They had a special of $699 for the Rancho 4" Crawler kit with full control arms, etc. Said there was 3 available... 3 of us WF members ordered all in the same day. The other 2 got theirs and then resold them on craigslist for a profit... I actually wanted to use mine. I received only 1 box of 2, which had just the springs. Which is the only part I really didn't want. They couldn't find the other box and the return of the springs was a fiasco. It took me 3 months to get a refund....

There are a few reasons why I don't like to buy from Amazon, but everybody has to make their own choices.
I buy from vendors that treat me well. I get better treatment from the vendors I repeatedly buy from, that is why I keep going back to them. If a vendor did not treat me well I would not go back to them and I would not feel bad about it.
There are a few vendors on this site that seem to do a great job, but there are some vendors on here that don't seem to do a great job. Additionally, if I am buying a big ticket item like a wheel and tire package I prefer to talk to the vendor to see what actual availability is and make my choices from there.
I have seen issues buying tires from the internet if there is a problem with the tire. You are often buying the tires from one vendor and then paying a different vendor to mount them. If the second vendor finds an issue with the tire when they mount it, they aren't always going to be able to resolve the issue and the first vendor may also be reluctant to resolve the issue. Whenever possible I prefer to buy tires from the same vendor that is going to mount them. That way I don't have to worry about what will happen if there is an issue with one or more of the tires.

Amazon can be hit or miss. Two things to look for: is a listing from Amazon, or "Amazon Marketplace" which means third-party vendor? Also look at the vendor's rating.

For automotive parts, you may get a good deal, but they don't sell everything. And for OEM parts pricing is all over the place. I recently replaced an evaporative air line. $18 on Quadratec, about the same on walmart.com and... $100 on Amazon! Go figure.

Only used them once for some hard to find Z-rated tires for my BMW; no-one else had my size. But I prefer Tire Rack or 4x4 retailers for tires.

Yep, and some pretty good advice too. If being in stock is important to you, call and verify before placing your order.

I'll add that my recent experience with Amazon hasn't been all that great. I am not a Prime member. What's been happening to me, is that even though the items are being sold directly by Amazon, and are in stock at Amazon, Amazon holds my order for almost two weeks before even before packing it up for shipment. I assume as a punishment for not being a Prime paid member.

I predominantly buy from Northridge4x4 as they have always beat everyone's prices and 99% of the time have stuff in stock. They have a brick and mortar store that has a giant warehouse next door at least the one in Silverdale WA does. The closest fourwheeler store 150 miles away also has a warehouse next door so both places have about everything in stock you just have to wait a few minutes while it gets brought up front. If NR4x4 does not have it they say so on their website before you order, unlike many of the others who only notify you it is backordered after you place the order. I will not use those vendors any more.

there are times when I use Amazon because of pure convenience ie cheap next day shipping when out of town and needed a part asap or last minute item needed quickly. I price shop on everything and I just don't find others beating NR4x4 altho sometimes 4wd.com does and they have always given great service as well.

I have to agree, the Free 2 day shipping is down to Free 1 Day shipping on A LOT of items for Prime Members now and more are coming day by day. I order off Amazon more than I do from stores, not necessarily for Jeep Parts though I have as well. Their prices aren't always cheaper as previously pointed out, but many times they are. I haven't really had any issues with Amazon and if I did, it was taken care of pretty quickly. Now Kohls will be accepting Amazon returns so that should make things even easier.

I am not a Amazon Prime member as typically shops I frequent don't require me to be a member to shop there, nor do they require me to be a member to get treated like a customer. If I have to pay for that, I can buy it somewhere else for the same price that doesn't require me to pay for the privilege.
I do know people who have Amazon Prime and have been having issues with Amazon lately. It seems they are expanding too fast and they can't always meet expectations.

I ordered my rotors & pads from @Quadratec recently, normal free shipping, and they arrived in two days via UPS. Grouchy male delivery driver, grizzly, middle-aged.

I ordered something else from Amazon Prime and chose the "no rush" service for their $1 credit they give. Still got it in two days, free, and the delivery driver was a stone-cold young foxy lady.

Amazon. Hate'em and love'em at the same time.

I resisted Prime for a long time... Then the combination of waiting up to 2 weeks for my orders and the Prime Video which had some shows we wanted to watch, I signed up and haven't looked back.

Local discount tire will usually match online tire and rim prices of you give them a chance.
I ordered wheels and tires online once, never again.

I avoid Amazon. There are more and more counterfeit products on there and Amazon is having a really hard time controlling it. Amazons digital services are the product they really care about, so counterfeit products aren't a large concern for them. They are placing pressure on the seller to try and police it and it's not working.

Take the time to find an online vendor that meets your needs and order direct. NR4x4 is that for me, but occasionally they don't have what I want so I go elsewhere.

Also, be realistic about your expectations. I waited several weeks for my Atlas tool roll and it was definitely annoying, but I had to remind myself that I'm waiting for a quality hand made US product. It was definitely worth the wait.

If we like a companies products/services we should try and support them even if mistakes are made. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyone who runs a business knows it's impossible to be 100% perfect all of the time.

Give them an opportunity to correct the error and judge them AFTER they've had a chance to fix it.

Being dumped way back onto the very last in line, is my definition of being punished. I should be in the shipping queue, as to my place when ordering. Amazon has all the bandwidth they want.

I assume that when you go shopping, its pretty normal and expected for people to cut in front of you at the register because they are waving a membership card. For me, I would never go back to a place like that.

I feel it is foolish to pay extra money to Amazon for the only purpose is to treated as a valued customer.

5% cash back? That doesn't even cover the sales tax Amazon so quickly agreed to collect from me.

I like Quadratec: they know Jeeps, their customer service is pretty good, free shipping on most everything, and their stuff is guaranteed to fit.

While Amazon is good for certain things and their return policy can be easy —you have to check; it varies by seller— I got burned a few times receiving fakes and counterfeits from China that the listing claimed to be OE. And Amazon can’t tell the difference between a Jeep Wrangler and a Boeing 737.

Amazon has its place. If you need a Wix oil filter for a 2012 JK it beats having to drive down to Autozone, if they even have one. Plus theyll beat on price. And free shipping, might as well order two.

Plus you have to watch prices from day to day. Amazon has large price fluctuations on big ticket items. Sometimes you can really score!

You are in the shipping queue, the no rush shipping queue. It costs them more shipping to get same day, 1 day, or 2 day delivery. The cost is in part subsidized by the membership. Maybe you noticed but there is a fast screening at the airports called TSA Pre and one must pay and have a membership. There are hundreds of things I could list that have a membership. Don't like it, don't join.

There is a difference between getting better shipping, 1 day vs 2 day, and them not shipping at all for a week or two. If I don't get 1 day shipping because I am not a member, perhaps I pay for 2 day shipping. But then I find that they don't even ship the item for a week or two, yet I payed for two day shipping (or 3 - 5 day shipping, whatever). That is messed up.

Some of it has to do with availability. Example: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum: Most parts stores, even Walmart in my area don't carry it. Amazon is very competitive, and will have it delivered at no charge in 2-5 days. So why wouldn't I use them...

This is the exact problem I had with extreme terrain. I had that discussion on 3 separate orders. None of their products were actually in stock. Cancelled each order and because I had three cancelled orders, if I wanted to buy from them (right) I would have to create a new email address as my current one is flagged as problematic and unusable for purchases. So... their problems then became my problem. Never again. Northridge has always done me right since then.

I basically buy EVERYTHING via Amazon and 99% of the time, zero issues. In matter of fact, I avg 5 amazon deliveries a week at most of the year, LOL! Why not? Stores never have stock, traffic, bad service, etc.

Now most Jeep parts come via vendors here and mostly Quadratech.

But Amazon is going to put mots people out of business and good rides to a certain point. They have everything I need, fast delivery and the best customer service I have ever seen.

They do that crap.
I joined and had fast shipping, but cancelled membership after they gave everybody free shipping from November to December. I figured why pay $110 (or whatever) a year when they give to others.

I do like to physically see a lot of what I buy, but that isn’t always possible.
I don’t have a problem with Amazon unless they hold my stuff for a week or four before shipping.

After ET "lost" five 35" tires and wheels that were supposedly in stock when I ordered them, and then lied to me about it for two weeks, I was done with them. They sent me two free t shirts after I canceled my order. They made decent shop rags.

Grand Tour. 75% of the reason I went Prime. The shipping is awesome for sudden issues that no one else has. And if two days means Sunday, they deliver on Sunday

I don' even know what a Prime membership costs at this point but whatever it is I know I save at least 10x the cost in gas, shipping, and time savings. I don't go to stores to buy almost anything anymore. I average 3-5 Amazon deliveries a week between my personal and business orders. I find they have amazing customer service on the rare occasion I have an issue. Just last week two orders went missing and it took my 5 minutes using their chat service to get issued a refund which showed on my card in less than 24 hours from my initial contact. As a small business owner I like to support local and US made products in general when I can. But I don't even have a local grocery store, or hardware store, or general store to choose from. It's really a choice between Amazon and any big box store.

I order as much as I can from Quadtratec for the Jeep. I live 20 minutes from Quad so they're a local business to me. I often order and pickup. I have friends that work there and I know I'm supporting them directly.
DIRT BOY and Bobnh like this.
