Window Tint

Summer is coming... Here in The UAE it gets feckin' hot... It'll easily hit 50C and on occasion 56... (I think that's 122 - 132F).

So I dropped the Jeep in to get a headliner and a tint. I was told that the legal tint is 30%, so I agreed to it.

But this evening I read that there are new rules that 50% is allowed (increased from 40%). I'm a little pissed off at the Jeep dealer for being so wrong and selling me a product that they should have known was wrong.

I've called them, left messages and an email in an attempt to stop them, but realistically will 50% be okay... I still want visibility at night? Will it be too dark?

Yes, 30% is darker. The figure is the amount of light that is able to pass through the tint.

I agree with above two replies. I think the OP didn't know or understand how tint works .

Yes, a 30% tint is darker than 50%. The percentage is a measurement for the amount of light that makes it thru the glass. The glass itself on a lot of cars is somewhere around 70-80%, and is mostly unnoticable to the naked eye. A 50% tint will be better than nothing, but it will not be a very drastic change in darkness. 30% is darker still, but still easy to see thru. 10% and lower is when it starts getting really dark, and can be hard to see out of at night. That said, my previous car has 3% and it was just fine.

I'm no help since I'm in the states and in NY but our driver/passenger front doors were just banned anything darker than 70%...which I got and which is basically clear. But yes the lower the percent the darker the tint. They won't pass us on inspection here in NY but assuming I have mirrors mounted they would have to pass me if I showed up without any doors

I actually had an inspector here in VA fail my '48 Willys for this reason. I showed up with no top or doors....he made me drive home, put the top and doors on, and drive back before he would pass it. (Mirror was mounted on the body)

He also threatened to fail for lack of seat belts - I told him they were not OEM in '48 and were therefore not required....then "no rubber on pedals" - I told him they were not OEM in '48 and therefore not required.....he was an old dude too, and figured he would know the deal.....

...by the time he got to the top, I think both of us were frankly sick of each other so rather than continue to argue, I put on the top....

... turns out that the numbering is backwards in Dubai... 50% is darker than 30%. Anyway, they went ahead with the tint despite my attempts to stop the installation @ 30%. I also added a Mopar headliner...

It was the usual 31C/88F, got into the Jeep & was subconsciously expecting the usual heat and lack of oxygen... Nope, it was nice in there, almost cool... I'm very impressed.
