@Prelector

Such a good looking Rubicon. The Hard Rock are still my favorite, and Gobi no less. It looks like you invested in the Locking Hood catches. From the dash cam video you must have seen them bypass it to get under the hood. This is their number one route for stealing the Jeep Wrangler. Cutting the horn wire before they even try entering the cabin. Once they open the cabin with the factory key, it's just flashing lights. It may not be on the dash cam at this point, but they had to get your VIN weeks ago, to have an OEM key made.

As some others have suggested, covering up your visible VINs, so they have no way of getting it without opening your vehicle. As an added layer of security you should also invest in the Mopar hood lock, and a metal mesh grill. Nothing will stop a thief, but making the process more difficult or time consuming might deter them to look for an easier target.

I went back to find a similar thread I posted about the Cyclops Anti-theft I bought. Surprisingly you had posted in the thread. Check it out, Post #16. https://www.wranglerforum.com/f274/ni...l#post32708353

That is some true irony there!

As to the hood locks, I had the metal latches installed, but I didn't go with locking ones, not realizing exactly how wranglers are stolen. I'll definitely be going with locking ones on the replacement, though!

Yes, I'm truly bummed I can't get another Hard Rock now, though the Recon is a damn fine substitute. Right now, I'm going back and forth between a '18 JKU Recon in Gobi or a '18 JLU Rubicon in Billet.

Long story short, the case was tossed out of court because he hadn't actually stolen anything at the point where I interrupted. He had the tools of the trade in his coat pocket along with the knobs from the stereo (Defense attorney argued 'so, he has a knob fetish'). But since he was still in the vehicle and hadn't actually removed anything, no crime was committed.

Lesson learned, let them finish stealing it and then catch them...

That's crazy! So they didn't charge him with attempted theft? The "664" penal code section would've fit when they didn't "complete" the deed.
If he broke into your car (doors on and locked) he should've been charged with possession of burglary tools too! Sounds like he may have been the nephew of a judge or DA!

I also met with a detective from the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, and handed over the actual camera and recordings; he's hopeful they can recover some DNA from the camera and maybe enhance pictures to get faces off it.

He also told me they broke up a ring operating in SoCal a year ago that focused on Jeep Wranglers... these guys took over 40 vehicles in 2 months before stopped. One of the leaders served 7 months of a 2.5yr sentence, and 3 days after getting out in March Jeep thefts had spiked again. He's wondering if my vehicle is from the same ring that has restarted.

Finally, they confirmed that my vehicle crossed the border into Mexico via San Ysidro. He said the high end Wrangers like my Rubicon are shipped south, and sell for ~$20k to narcos down there who love them, so there was very little chance of recovery at this point.

Crap! Now I'm going to be sleeping in my Rubi!

So my top was off and had no doors on it. He was charged and it went to court. I appeared as a witness. The charges got dropped. I couldn't tell you all of the reasons why because it's been 30 years. I just know that he walked out of that courtroom a free man, while I had to absorb the expense/effort of putting my stereo back together.

As the saying goes, "Payback is a b*tch and her stripper name is Karma", two weeks later, the same dude got nicked for grand larceny and did some time for that one.

I'll be putting LoJack on the replacement Jeep. I've spoken to a few buddies that are Sheriff's deputies here, and they all swear by it, even with the whole border situation.

I was under the impression that lo jack only activated or notified a cop of they were in the general vicinity. Not like a GPS type deal. Maybe that's a myth, but cops would just drive to known areas and if they get a hit then great. If not then oh well.

Wonder if having a manual transmission Jeep is a theft deterrent as far as the organized theft rings go? I have a manual Rubicon with a Mopar hood lock but am looking at putting in a Ravelco device on as well.

All my vehicles have been manual except this jeep. Had 4 break ins on 4 vehicles and the car was never stolen just the stereo and ruined glass and interior. Never felt like my car anymore though wish they just took it lol.

Last one they stole my headunit that didn't have a face and homemade sub......... jerks

I have one. When my former Wrangler was stolen, one of the first questions the cop asked me was whether I had a tracking device in it (no). If that Wrangler had a tracking device, I probably would have been reporting a caught car thief needed an ambulance.

So I got the Mopar EVTS device when I ordered my current Willies. Not cheap, of course. Got some sort of discount off the list price so if I remember right it was close to $400.

Then you have to sign up for a plan with Mopar. Again, if I remember right there were three choices. Don't remember the names so I'll call them Basic, Middle and Top.

Basic Plan was about $150 a year. You get an app for your phone that allows you to track your Wrangler yourself. You could contact them something like 12 times a year to make sure your vehicle was still being tracked by them. And you could use it as a panic button in case of an accident. Hold down the button for ten seconds, they call you. If they can't reach you, they reach out to relatives and if that doesn't work then they call the cops.

Both the Middle and Top Plans were a one-time lifetime fee. I chose the Middle Plan. It was about $400. Same app and panic button feature of course. Unlimited calling per year. The Top Plan cost more, don't remember how much, and had all features of the other two plus something they called "Concierge Service" that allowed you to call them for information on gas stations, stores, restaurants, etc.

I like to check in with them about once a month while I'm out driving around to see if they can tell me where I am. So far, it's worked perfectly. Obviously, I'm hoping to never need to use it.

Once while I was out and about, I pressed the button and waited for them to call. No call. After ten or fifteen minutes, I realized I had left my phone at home. Oops. Turned around and went home immediately. My wife was freaked because they had called her looking for me. She found my phone. They said they would give it a few minutes for me to come home because they were tracking my Wrangler as it was headed towards our house. Luckily, I got home and called them before they called the cops. My bad. But hey, at least I know it worked, lol.

Insurance lead went on vacation this week, so it pushed everything out one more week. I've decided on the JLU Rubicon as my replacement, pending payout, and keeping an eye out for incoming inventory. Seen a few that are pretty close and still inbound locally, hopefully timing lines up and they are available when I'm clear to buy.

On the Drudge Report they are reporting today about car thief kits being sold on internet sites and some other related gear on amazon. Makes starting a car as easy as child's play.

All these push button new vehicles have made the determined thieves jobs even easier. They can scan your wireless fobs in your pocket as you walk by and get in and drive away without damaging anything or even giving the appearance they are anything but the rightful owner of the vehicle.

I highly recommend a Ravelco.

Ravelco Anti Theft Device

Best $500 Iíve spent on the Jeep.

I use to look out my window every evening and morning just to check if it was still in the driveway. I now feel very comfortable leaving the doors off and knowing my Jeep canít be hotwired or started with out the Ravelco.

UPDATE: Progressive called me today, 4 weeks to the day after I filed the claim. They've closed out the claim as stolen, unrecovered. Payout covers the outstanding on the loan and an additional ~3k in my pocket which covers the mods. I figure they gave me about $.60 on the dollar for the major mods I filed (stereo, lights, sundowner for hardtop, few extras). Overall I'm very pleased, other than the time it took.

Now, for the bad news: I'd decided on the JLU Rubicon as a replacement, and there's not a single JLU Rubicon in stock anywhere within 100 miles of San Diego that's anywhere close to worth buying. There's 1 with cloth seats, another that didn't have some of the other upgrades I wanted and too much to add aftermarket. There are a ton that are 'in transit' but most of those are 3+ weeks out. I'm planning to hit the phones tomorrow and check other markets nearby to see if I can find anything that way.

Which is worse: having the ache to buy a new vehicle, but no money to do it; or having a boatload of cash, and nothing decent to buy?

In the 1st scenario, you'll likely dive too deep into debt; in the 2nd, you'll settle for something less than ideal 'cuz it's available.

Take your time; get exactly what you want.... the waiting time will soon be forgotten!
Best of luck in your search...

My new JKU came off the train today in Phoenix, and I'll head over and pick it up Wednesday. Ended up going with the '18 Rubicon Recon in Gobi again, as close to my old baby as I could get. Really excited, and I'll post pics of her as soon as I take possession.

And she's home. Picked up the Recon in Phoenix, from Airpark Jeep on Wednesday. Excellent dealer there, BTW!

I put the Sunrider for Hardtop on first thing, and now I'm waiting for some smaller parts to show up. Major things will have to wait a bit, as the family CFO, my wife, has put a hard freeze on all capitol expenditures

Just read those this whole thread.

What a roller coaster. Sorry that happened to you! The new JKU looks gorgeous! I recently picked up a Willys W and I really wanted Gobi but couldn't find the right combination.
