2000 Sahara Lift and Gearing Questions

Hi all, this past November I bought my first Wrangler. I have always wanted one and finally had sufficient funds to purchase one. It has a stock suspension which has done its time- in other words its time to be replaced. But who the hell wouldn't redo the suspension without adding a lift! Been doing research and since I don't and wont do serious off roading, I'm not gonna lift more than 2.5". I just have a few questions as far as brand, re-gearing and tires that I could use guidance on from someone who knows more about TJ's than I.

If I run a 2'' inch lift with 31x10.5 BFG All Terrain (Seems pretty common in the Jeep world) will I need to do any "re-gearing" ?

Second, what does 're-gearing" mean? Can I do it myself, or would it be best to take it to a shop and have a professional do it?

Lastly, in terms of lift kit brands offered, how well does a rough country lift run? Which brands are best in quality and ride ? It seems like Tera-Flex and Old Man Emu top the charts...

Thanks for your help guys- hopefully with the answers to these questions I can give my Jeep a more aggressive stance with better quality tires and ride.

I had 3.07 gears on my 2000 Sahara with 31x10.5x15 super swampers, but I had a manual trans. It isn't idral, but it was not awful. If you have the auot I think it woulf be a lot less fun.
That said, what gears do you have? Rear axle? The d44 was an option for the Sahara, apparently many got it, mine was not one of the fortunate ones.
I ran the hell out of my 3.07 open/open d30/d35 combo with nothing broken but a couple sway bar links.
Regearing is best left to a quality shop unless you have a lot of experience and tools, or have friends that do. It's kinda critical on the setup and you have to know what to look for.
For lift, I went with a Rubicon Express budget boost, which is just 2" spacers and shocks. It was cheap, and worked, but having done that I can say you will get much more bang for the buck by getting a spring lift. The OE springs get old and just slump down, a 2" spacer brings them near stock in a lot of cases. I have heard GREAT things about the ProComp springs, but not their shocks. Could get the springs and Rancho shovks, or maybe Rancho makes a 2" TJ kift, I imagine they do and they are very reputable and quality lift/shocks in my experience.

Oh, also you can get a build sheet from Mopar that should tell you what it came from the factory with. To tell if rear is d44 or d35, the d35 has a rubber plug, the d44 has a 3/8" drive bung.
There should be a tag on the axles somewhere, I cant recall, that says what your gear ratio is. Which is helpful, if no one has changed them already.

OME and BDS are good lifts for around 2". If you have 3.73 gears and an auto, 33s are even livable. The 32rh auto (1997-02') handles being slightly ungeared better than a 5 speed. I've had a few Saharas with different combos. Never just 31s though.
