‘95 NP231 On My ‘99?

I just noticed when I was under the Jeep today my transfer case has a tag from September of 1995. Is that normal or is it indicative of a replacement at some point?

The quote was from a pm....

IF it came from a cherokee there would be no issues

IF it came from a yj and was not modified there would be two main differences... one would be that it wouldn't have a true neutral so if you towed it w all 4 wheels on the ground (ie flat tow) you could have excessive wear or damage and if you towed it on a dolly or wheel lift tow truck you would have immediate damage because in N the front and rear drive shafts are forced to turn together... secont is it would have syncros for engagement of 4wd on the flu but those would not cause you any problems...

There are a couple of other more minor differences that wouldn't cause issues ..

The only effect related to a sye is an additional bearing in a yj case that gets removed when installing the sye...

Kind of agree
It has as much true neutral as a TJ 231 not that true neutral is a defined term
Both force the chain and sprockets to turn whenever front driveshaft spins
Both oil adequately with rear drive shaft spinning
Both disconnect input rotation from out spinning when in neutral

The YJ 231 in applications with CAD have two main differences
A bronze syncro cone to bring front output/driveshaft up to speed when shifting into 4wd
Needle bearings between sprocket and rear output shaft and as stated you have to knock out the bearings to install a typical SYE (of course not with a hack and tap)

Also most earlier 231 YJ cases leak fluid if rear driveshaft is removed based on what the rear output seal seals against

In the yj case the front and rear outputs are locked together when the case is in neutral but the tj case allows them to turn at different speeds... ie true neutral
