98 - Ash tray keeps falling out

Hello all.

When I bought my 98 tj a few months back, it didn't come with an ash tray so I picked one up on ebay. Now I find that when I hit a pretty good bump that it tends to fall out. The other day I was driving with the top and doors off and hit a bump going around a corner and I almost lost it out the passenger side

Any suggestions? I'd prefer to have it actually able to open and close, but would consider gluing it shut or something...

Thanks.

You might be missing the small metal 'clip' it catches against when it is closed.

If the clip is still installed, try bending it down a bit so it's a tighter fit when the ashtray is closed.

TJ ashtray falling out

I just bought a 1999 TJ and I have been having the same problem. I've found just a few images on the web and that's it... So I took two of the images and scratched together a template in Illustrator for making one of these ashtray clips. I would have just bought it but I listened to advice on another forum and bought Clip-Retainer 6035859 which may go behind the ashtray when clipping the dash to the firewall or something. It is a small 10mmx15mm clip that I bought for 7 bucks plus shipping and does me no good to hold my ashtray in. The first template on the right was too big so I shrunk it down a tad. The blue lines are fold lines. I used aluminum flashing, tin snips and a dremmel to cut it out. The space between the two black lines must equal 50mm when printing out. The lower dimensions are from each opening as I measured them in a 99 TJ. I just taped the small template to a piece of flashing and cut it out with tin snips. The critical areas that need to be accurate are the top edge and bottom edge of the template. Mine weren't straight and that would have helped. Also having the folds be accurate would have helped too. I could just crank out another one (it took 10 min to cut out and 10 min to bend and place) but it's working so I'll wait. Hope this helps someone not make the same mistake I did and is a relatively easy fix.

Enjoy.
