Do we own a TJ or a YJ?

We have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler and need to know if it is a tj or a yj. What is the difference between the two?

Wrangler YJs and TJs are different generations.

The Wrangler YJ was built from 1986 to 1995. The Wrangler TJ was manufactured from 1997 to 2006.

YJ's have leaf springs and square headlights, TJ's have coil springs and round headlights.

If you have leaf springs you have a YJ. If you have coil springs you have a TJ.

Another way to tell is if your turn signal indicators are located in the front part of the fender it is a TJ. If your turn signal indicators are located below the headlights it will be a YJ.

The best way to tell is post a pic of your Jeep on here and ask questions.

Or just go by year

If 95 or older and a wrangler it is a YJ (square headlights, leaf springs and windshield wipers that park part way up windshield) and a gas cap under the lose seat plate on the back end (prominent in original Jurassic park movie)

If it is 97 -2006 and a wrangler it is a TJ
Round headlights, coil springs, windshield wipers that park fully down and a gas cap on the side

If you have a 1996 wrangler call the press as you have the only one ever made

Looks like he changed the tj pic to one with wipers parked properly but on seeing your post I did look and note the TJ pic that was up before didn't have the wipers parked

Nice attention to detail

The YJ ones are parked high just like always on a YJ

I know that, but until I saw the post that the picture was changed, I was confused, and now I am just curious as to what picture was posted.

It was a TJ in the rain with its wipers up on the windshield.

The picture was a TJ parked in a parking lot on a rainy day.
It appears that the driver turned the key off with the wipers still going.
Causing the wipers to remain in a half sweep of the windshield.
Looking similar to a parked YJs wipers.
jjvw was just joking around when he saw the wipers on the TJ up instead of down.
It took me a minute to figure out what he was posting about.
When I did,,,I changed the photo to one with the wipers correctly parked.
No big deal.
Ya gotta have fun when you can.

I'm all for having fun. I was just having fun when I said us old guys are confused as well. Because, well, I turned 40 last month and am approaching "old" status. Still, I appreciate understanding why it was said.

Man, I wish they had kept the rolls bars like that on the TJ. I'm sure they're not as safe, but they look cool as hell.

Thanks.

I certainly realized while I was typing that, that there are just as many members here older than me than there are younger. That's why I said "approaching" and am in no hurry to get there. Those decade milestones just have a way of making your And each one seems to go by exponentially faster. I only hope I'm still enjoying the jeep life well into my 60s as well!
