My key will not come out of the ignition no matter how much I push the button or wiggle the darn thing! Any ideas? It is a 2000 jeep wrangler sport. (5spd, 4.0)
i have the same problem, and not only is the key stuck in, but the tumbler has a lot of resistance going to start and on... so much so that the key will stick in the "start" position and keep turning the starter unless i manually pull the key back to "on" myself
I would say if it is a regular switch and they didn't put any kind of pass-lock on them in the newer models then just go to the nearest auto parts store and buy a key and tumbler switch set for around $22 and replace the switch. It comes with two keys and if it is like the other models can be changed in about 20-30 mins. Now here is the bad part if you don't do it now and hold off until you can no longer turn your switch to the ON position it will take you about 2 hours to change because the switch has to be in the on position before you can push the locking pin in to remove the old switch. So do it now before you have to drill out the tumblers and turn it to ON with a screw driver.
try pressing down hard on the brake...this happened to me once or twice and by doing that I somehow got some electrical switch to engage so as to free the key.
Key stuck in ignition: Just happened to my daughter (1999 Sport, Auto Trans). I read on other places on the Web that if you reach up under the steering column and wiggle the wires and cables there the key will release. It worked.
I was thinking the same thing...plus think about how quickly you can now outrun those crazy monkeys that are running around in your backyard...darn monkeys are always trying to get me.
Mine did this a while back and the key wouldn't turn either.
I had to get a new tumbler. I think it was a result of simply hopping in the Jeep and just shoving the key in quickly and turning it to crank it at almost the same time.
Now I take my time when inserting the key.
I have the same problem. I need help as well. I have a 97 wrangler and the key is stuck, it can't turn on, and I can't turn it to take the key out. It's stuck in the middle like Malcom. Help?!
I am having a similar issue - it appears as if the lock release button is stuck in. This would usually pop out a bit when key is inserted. I've read posts on changing the tumbler unit but I don't think that is my issue as the button to release the key seems to be a separate part.
Thank you for the suggestion, it is not a locked steering wheel. Last night I removed the plastic that surrounds the steering column and was able to remove the key tumbler, the lock release button is not part of this and that seems to be the issue, I just don't know how to replace and or repair that part. I will try to include a photo of the lock release button that I referring too.
