Hi all, I have a shot at buying a one owner 06 LJ, but the owner had the frame welded. It was at a reputable shop, and everything else but the top is decent. Should I stay away from the welded frame?
Don’t have pics yet... However, it’s an auto trans, all stock, 102k miles, and maintained by the local reputable mechanic that I use.
The older gentleman that traded it in was the original owner (who I’ve known for 30 years), and the dealership doesn’t want to spend the $ on it so they’re selling it as is (needs new top and tires are bald)
I can buy it for $5k as it sits, and I have extra rubi wheels and tires for it and a friend has a top for $250...
How’s that for info?
I would take it and have it checked out.. 5k is nice but if all a dealer has to do is dump a couple grand into and sell it for 10-15k.. and they are not.. something else is off. How much of the frame was welded?
I would wonder why the frame needed welding. Stress, impact, accident? My Jeep has newer paint on the front end indicating damage repair but after a close look I determined it was only sheet metal repair and took a chance. It worked out great for me so my point is if the repair was done properly it may still be a good buy.
A pretty good amount welded due to rust... probably from front of rear wheel up to front control arm mount. Looks like they were trying for a smaller patch and had to keep going. Here are a couple pictures of it... Driver side and rear cross member look rough too... no work done there... Wondering if my $5k wouldn’t be better spent as a down payment on a nicer one?
That's a lot of rust looking at the pics. I passed up several like that when shopping for mine. Within a couple of weeks searching I found a rust free one and bought it. I'd pass and keep shopping...looking back im glad i did
If you're still thinking about buying it check out the safe-t-caps. If you've got a nice big welder and ouve got an affinity for self pain, it might be worth it.
Take the 5k and buy something nice. you are buying a problem. Dealer don't want to invest a few hundred dollars tells you something. If that were in better shape he could make a ton of $$$ off of it.
