New to me jeep.

I picked up an 04 rubi today. Git a great deal on it. I'm from Michigan, so rust is always an issue. This one had been cared for , and is solid. Needs some tlc, but all in all, I'm pretty stoked.

200 miles or so. Been trolling C-list for a couple weeks, looking for the "one". Almost pulled the trigger on a couple of others, but my wife kept telling me to keep looking, if it wasn't exactly what I wanted. So I did, and found this one in Fort Wayne.. I was ready to give up, and had to Houston or Florida!

For Now...Fix a couple spots of rust, Fluids change, Fix front locker (I don't think its building pressure, as its not engaging but the lights blink), clean up/paint the wheels, and Drive the piss outta it.

This winter, I'll do a little more, maybe. Eventually it will probably get 33 x 12.5 tires and new wheels.. probably do flat fenders instead of a lift tho. I like keeping my center of gravity low. I'd also like to get half doors and a soft top. Lighting upgrade, bumpers, etc.

Can't wait to see more pics of it. Kinda wishing I had looked longer for a rubi.

So...I'm starting to remember why I quit buying used cars...This Jeep hasn't leaked ANY oil, anywhere, which was a big selling feature. I put about a hundred miles on, just back and forth to work and screwing around. It was the first REAL test drive, so I pushed her a little. I think I saw 80 mph on the highway. Anyway, yesterday I noticed that there was gear oil on the garage floor, under the rear diff. Sum-bitch. Little bit of investigating and it appears to be leaking from what I thought was a vent tube.

Wanted to get the diff fluid changed anyway, so tonight I thought I'd tackle the rear, so I could see what was leaking. Turns out, its the airline for the locker. Apparently the stock 90 degree fitting broke long ago and whomever fixed it placed a plastic hose mender inline. It DOESN'T fill the hole in the housing, so I assume when the thing gets hot, like when wheeling or driving 80 MPH down the highway, it pushes oil out.

Some digging on the internets revealed a part number for said fitting...05083663AB. I looked it up online at a local dealer...50 bucks! are you Frikken kidding me? So, I guess I know why there is a plastic hose mender installed. I will be raiding the hose barb aisle at Menards and Fastenal tomorrow, looking for a decent solution. May have to get creative...I don't have a lathe, but I have a drill press and files...Brass is soft...and its braze-able. Finally, some Epoxy to hold it in place, and Voila...Should be good. I hope its something like this that's wrong with my front locker too...

I also took the opportunity while the diff cover was off to sandblast and paint it. I should be able to get it back together tomorrow. The trick I need to pull off is not to get too involved in my Wrangler, as I have a garden tractor (another hobby of mine) torn apart into about a thousand pieces right now. It NEEDS to get reassembled before spring.

Congrats! I'm not really surprised about the leak; your TJ is 13 years old.

Be careful if you plan to trailer it. Your TJ looks like it sits a bit too far forward for that trailer to be of good use. Handling will get squirrely in your tow rig.

Yeah, it was actually perfect on the trailer. ..not a hint of wander at all. Tow rig is a 13 F150 SCREW w/ eboost. As an FYI, too little tongue weight not too much, causes poor trailering in my experience...and I have a lot. Too much much will overload the axle and springs of the tow vehicle...and I suppose in extreme cases will cause poor behavior.

I fixed the leak last night. I made a new fitting out of a brass compression fitting and a length of flexible copper refrigeration line. Basically turned the threads off a 3/16 fitting, cut the other half off, and the drilled a 1/4 hole through it to hold the copper. Used my die grinder with a burr to open the 1/4 hole up to a nice slip fit, then soldered it together. Gave the ends a little flare, and voila! A new fitting that won't rust out.

I say just put some bigger axles, tires, and lockers on the garden tractor and go wheeling...
