I have an 03' TJ 4.0 manual. 91k miles, lived a spoiled life in So Cal taken food care of. Rarely sees temps less than 50. Any reason not to use full synth 5w30?
I see no reason not to use synthetic. With many stores offering closeout pricing once or twice a year, sales and rebates, I can get synthetic oil pretty cheap. Especially with a little patience and knowing where and when to look for it.
I dont care about price, I buy 5 qt jugs online and do my own service. Not sure what it had before I got it at 67k 6 years ago but it's been full synth since.
Was using 10w 30 before but my Land Rover take 5w30 and I'd rather only have to stock one weight. Put 5w30 the last couple changes (every 6 months cause I barely put any miles on it) and it seems fine. I do have to change my rear main as it's got the drizzles.
I typically use the weight suggested by the manufacturer. In some vehicles I use full syn, in others a blend in some conventional. Can I explain why I use the different types... nope, I really don’t have a clue. I do run a test sample thru black stone labs on every vehicle at least once early on.
For an interesting read take a look at the FAQ on black stone labs web site. Scroll down and Pay particular attention to the question on what oil to use. Interesting to read the oil lab techs take on using a particular oil.
