Show off your extreme 2.5l builds

It's no surprise that Jeeps are expensive to build, ie (Just Empty Every Pocket). But for some of us money is an object and with today's economy a lot of us are finding fewer and fewer disposable dollars laying around. I am one of those, I picked up my '99 SE a few months ago on a strict budget. After wheeling a few times with my sons I now want more! I've thought about selling (even have an add out right now) but do not think I will get enough to buy what I want. Now I am toying with the idea of building my rig around the 2.5 platform. Junk yard parts, custom fab, and plenty of time are what I will be using. With shallow pockets and to prove that you don't need 400hp I wanna see how far I can go with the 2.5l. Keep in mind to that this is NOT my DD so I don't care what fuel economy is or "drivability" on the highway. True off-roaders and not pavement princesses are what I am looking for. SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!

Mine is my DD and I run 6" lift with 35s, I do not do a lot of crazy off roading but do occasionally hit some trails.

Mine is far from an extreme build, but I am happy with the combination of parts that it has for what I do.

'99 SE
Stock axles with 4.10
Zone 4.25" Combo lift
33" Duratracs
Thrush Welded muffler
Sears Platinum battery
WARN M6000 winch

Not alot into it...but does great offroad.

That thing is awesome! I can't wait until I get a 8.8 under mine. I think I have all of the research done. Now I just need the funds. I am starting a half ass TT this week. Hopefully it goes well.

How much did the 4.10 cost you? Did you install them yourself? Does it give you more top end speed and still have more power in all gears? Explain as much as you can about regearing and prices plz. I'm about to regear mine but I don't know much about the regearing side of jeeps. Lol thanks!

410s came stock in manual trans 2.5...

As for regearing, you'll spend around 1k-1500 for it. You'll do both axles otherwise you can't use 4wd. Gearing is going to depend on what tires and trans you have (since we already know you've got a 4cyl). My guess is you want or already have 33s so if that is the case you'll want 4.88s.

Ok I'm balling on a budget and I can't afford that right now. What other options do I have for more power?

A motor swap...but that's going to be more expensive than the gears lol.

Otherwise...nothing. Not an intake, not an exhaust, not a throttle spacer, not headers.

And just to clear it up...gears dont increase power, just help where the power is used.

One thing you could try in order to increase your midrange would be a 4.0L throttle body swap. I personally have one and although I'm speaking from a butt dyno perspective, it did help my midrange. Didn't increase power at all, just helped it on some of the hills I was used to it bogging down on.

Well dang... Lol i guess I'll just wait on that. I'm looking at prices on lifts right now. I think k I'm gonna go 2 inch body lift and 3 inch suspension. Got any pointer on that subject? I'm sticking with my 33's.

Can you give me a link with the price of the 4.88's. Idk what all I'll need to buy. I'll be doing this myself so the labor cost doesn't need to be added.

Save yourself the trouble on the lift you've picked out and get the zone 4.25 kit. Will be a much better setup for your 33s and you'll have what you need to not drop the tcase. A 2" body lift will be a bad option.

I also have a 4.0 throttle body. Theatrically it makes an improvement.

Do you have any before and after numbers on your motor work? Was there a noticeable power gain for the $$?

honestly it has some more power and after regearing it made a nice difference. I can check my papers at home. I want to say roughly $2000 for the work. It still struggles going up big hills that's why I want the 4.9

Can't agree with this more emphatically.

I also have a '99 SE on 33"s, 4.88s and lots of mods. The only drive train mods that will help is the re gear, CAI, spacers and catback systems all look great, and you can feel some changes in power ranges, but not in power. Lots of people wheel very hard on the 2.5, enjoy and have a great time.

Had this for years now, DD and weekend in the woods. Build a few CJs, Jeeps have really got expansive over the last 5 years. I would buy them for 1200 to 1500. So a off body restore and sell them. Those day are gone...

2001 2.5L TJ, bought stock in 2007. Its come a long way; see my signature for full modifications. Future plans include after-market cage and tummy tuck. Mine is no longer a daily driver; mostly just rocks now:

I also have the 4.0 throttle body. IMO, it helps with the low-end torque.
