Spare tires gone.

Y dad thinks the reason every jeep's missing spare tire is because it was "stolen" "they just rip off the tire" he said. What do you think the reason the tires are gone. I think the are off due to weight for off reading or getting it the way.
Thanks.

I'm sure some do get stolen, depends where you live.

But many Jeep guys have on board air (co2 tank, compressor etc) so if you have a plug kit and a way to air back up, many choose to run without spare.

I'm paranoid myself, always leave the spare on.

I actually see very few Jeeps without a spare tire around where I live. I am sure some people like the look without one, and maybe some are stolen, but a lot of people leave them on - especially if they are going offroad.

I personally think that jeeps look odd without the spare tire on the back. But....what was worse was seeing a billet silver JKU today with a hard tire cover in billet silver. Just doesn't look right and yes...it was some older lady with manicured fingernails that was driving and obviously didn't understand "the wave"

I only have a 31" spare for now with my 33s but i removed the back seat and put it back there. I like the look when riding doorless and topless

Agreed...i see very few without a spare where i'm located

I personally dont have a spare but thats because I removed it a long time ago and never put it back on. All the hardware is removed from my gate as well.

I just put mine back on a couple days ago. Stupid robin likes to make a nest in it in the spring.

Thinking about it, must be something about my TJ. Had a robin build a nest in the 9hrs I was at work one day. Front passenger tire. Prob 95% completed.

I hate robins.

Some run without for weight sure, some because they don't want to purchase a full sized spare if they have 33's or 35's... or don't want to buy a carrier. It looks pretty silly when there is a factory sized spare on a lifted jeep with 33's/35's

I didn't like the look of no spare for a long time, but it grew on me... I like it now

But for the record, I run with a 33 spare on 33's, I'm just too paranoid.

I have a full size spare. I take it when I go offroading. On the back it costs me 1 MPG. I carry oba and a plug kit.

Like indicated above, where I am at, there are not many without a spare. The ones that are, they are removed for a reason. Stealing of the spare is not common (search the forum). Your first clue when you see one without, is the carrier removed? If it is, likely there is a reason it is not there.

Funny, the biggest concern about this thread is why people don't have a spare...and here I am wanting to have a 2nd spare mounted on my roof rack

But most of these responses have answered why some people don't run a spare.

I've had slow leaks from nails, but I haven't had a flat that stranded me for 20 years. I don't like carrying around 70+ extra lbs hanging off the rear... I see better w/o it and carry a plug kit and two cans of fix-a-flat, if that fails, I have AAA.

When I go off-road, I'll take the spare and a high lift jack

I wouldn't use Fix-a-flat on anything but steel wheels, that stuff tears up the inside of the rim.

I'd like one on the hood, like an old Land Rover, but with these big tires, not possible

Once you get to >35" tires, mounting the spare becomes a greater challenge. If the Jeeps you see missing the spare have large wheel/tire combos, I could understand that relationship.

FWIW, I don't see many Jeeps without spares, either.

I agree with the others. Very few here in AZ who run without a spare.

I see plenty who don't hang a spare on the back. Instead they put it in the the back where the rear seat goes. Main reason for this is twofold; first, you don't have the added weight of a bumper/tire carrier combo. Secondly, when wheeling in tough spots it gets caught up in dirt or rocks when trying to climb.

In this picture, you can clearly see where my spare is dragging through the ground. It wasn't quite enough to hang me up on this one, but it certainly gets in the way at times.
