Would a HP Dana 30 with the same gears bolt right in to his tj. If its not a direct bolt in what needs to be modified, also what years would have what he is looking for. The reason he wants a Cherokee axle vs. A tj one is because tj axles are hard to find and pricey.
There are some different versions. Some XJs (the late ones) got the TJ LP30. Many got the HP. The HP comes in two basic flavors. One has the hated vacuum disconnect system (Central Axle Disconnect, or CAD) that on paper sounds great. But it breaks. Do not get one of these unless you get one of those CAD Delete kits that allows you to use a solid shaft.

The one you want is basically a TJ axle with the high pinion. The CAD axle has the box beneath the passenger UCA tower that looks like a fat sleeve from the front. If you see one where the entire passenger side tube looks just like a TJ with no extra junk then this would be good.

It is a direct bolt-in. They made a change some time back that makes one version's brakes not work with the other's unit bearings. If he gets one he needs to figure out which version it is so he knows what parts to purchase.

I bought a 1993 HP 30 the other day. It is a holy mess but ought to eventually clean up nicely. I will cannibalize my current D30 into it. The knuckles, shafts, brakes and carrier will be transferred to the HP 30, along with the ring, pinion and master install kit I just bought. The HP uses "reverse cut" gears (or something like that). The carriers swap, but the gears do not. Shafts and all that do, however.)

Chances are that he might end up with the non-CAD (which is good) but with the older, smaller shafts and U joints. His current stuff will install just like in a regular D30, so he can just chuck the skinnies if he wants.

The HP30 runs off the opposite side of the gears from the LP30, so it is somewhat stronger. With alloy shafts it is almost as good as a "fake" D44 (stock) in the front of the Rubicon. Not quite, but it is close, and it is very inexpensive.

XJ Dana 30:

1984 - 1992 - Dana HP30 (CAD)

1993 - 1999 - Dana HP30 (non-CAD)

2000 - 2001 - Dana LP30 (the so-called TJ axle)

Tonight I finished up some upgrades to the steering system. Took it for a spin. Smiles the whole way.

Yj-islander-project: I left out a couple of important things if one wishes to try and re-gear at home:

The LP TJ D30 axle uses a crush sleeve. The HP 30 does not. It sets up like the D44. This might be worth noting if you plan on trying to re-gear your own axles. I would prefer to NOT have to keep wasting crush sleeves as I bumble about, learning to do this as precisely as needed. Once crushed, the sleeve is not salvageable. Didn't get stuff right the first ten times? You will need eleven crush sleeves. Not so with the HP30, which uses shims/washers/whatever.

Further, I outlined the improvements to ring gear strength because of the teeth engaging on the stronger side, but I left out that you also get 4" of additional clearance for the shaft and an improved driveline angle that might be worth it if you are lifted like 4" or more. Every little bit helps in such a case, and this axle is a poor man's upgrade delight because of all these little improvements to the vehicle.

Also, I may have my years wrong a little, and my information about some of this might be inaccurately remembered, but the gist of what I am saying is correct. It is a better axle and a relatively inexpensive upgrade with lots of small benefits that add up to something more of us ought to consider doing to our TJs.

Islander, you and your bud need to go nuts with this. Post a writeup and a lot of pics for us to gawp at, man.

I didn't double check your years, but there should be lots of HP D30's to pull off '95-99 Cherokees.

Front Axles
Dana 30 high pinion - reverse cut - 27 spline, 1.16" diameter shafts, 7.13" ring gear - used 84-99 (some axles through 91 are vacuum disconnect, 92+ are non-disconnect, 89-95 with ABS have 5-297x u-joints, all 95+ have 5-297x u-joints, all others have 5-260x u-joints)

Until '00-01, which is then the low pinion.

Ha yeah, was mainly just thinking about the axles I want. Instead of buying axles, I have instead purchased:

An XJ - $6,250
A Land Cruiser - $11,000
A Lexus - $25,000
Misc. Firearms - $20,000

I need to prioritize better for my TJ I guess.

Use the firearms to shoot the Lexus and land cruiser, the XJ to tow them to the scrap yard. Recoup some cost and get back to work on the TJ.

Those tend to work when the Jeeps are broken so I'd rather not.

My Dad and I Monstalined the inside, fixed the license plate lights so I'm legal again, and put in some cab lights! Sorry the pictures are kind of fuzzy.

Thanks. It is pretty beefy. The whole bumper cost me about $130 to build - much cheaper than buying one - not to mention they don't even make them for this winch!

Here is the build thread on WeldingWeb if anyone is interested: Jeep Front Winch Bumper Build

I had a coupon for Krogers where it added 500 fuel points to my card. After all was said and done at the end of the month I had 700 fuel points which equals .70 cents off a gallon. Filled up my tank, 16 gallons for $17!!!! Man it felt like 1995 lol.

I'm glad you're getting down there.

I'm not going to be there. Too many people for me.

Plus I will be pulling the motor out of this

That my stepson rolled 2 weeks ago

and putting it into this
