wheels and tires

okay, so I just bought a jeep TJ and I'm thinking about upgrading my wheels. But I don't know a damn thing about rims and tires. so whats the ideal-typical tire and rim size for the off-road lift look?

I usually go with 15x8" wheels with 3.75" backspacing. 31x10.50" tires are as big as you can go without a lift.

yes, those are all lifted and either 33" or 35" tires. max tire size without a lift is 31x10.5

this one was OEM suspension with 31"x10.5" tires

pretty sure this one had a 1.25" BL at the time this pic was taken along with 31"x10.5" tires.

Check your local laws regarding tire coverage by fenders. Some states it's a no no to have the tires outside the fender.

Good info hereinabove. The Boogieman knows his stuff. Don't forget experts highly recommend you re-gear your axles if you go 33" or larger. A shop will charge in the neighborhood of $2k for parts and labor therefore. No chump change.

An unlifted TJ with 31's looks great. Go about 2-3 inches of lift for 33's. If you're thinking 35's, then a D44 rear axle is highly recommended.

For wheels: 15"x8" with 3.75-4.0" of backspacing is typical. If you want a little sticking out, stay on the 3.75" side.

For tires (without a lift): 31x10.5x15 is probably your best best. They make a few 31x12.5x15's I believe, but not many.

Anything bigger than 31s, you would be looking at a lift, possibly gears/sye/CV driveshaft/etc.

for onroad use - tires and rims are more expensive and its harder to find C-Load tires in larger rim diameters.

for offroad use - its a downgrade as you can't air down as much and theres a better chance to damage the rim

I guess an important question is what are you going to be doing with your Jeep. Mostly daily driver with only occasional off road mud/sand, or aggressive off roaring. I’ve had 35x12.5 on mine. 4” lift, changed the gears so I could cruise on the HWY. I didn’t change the axels. Nothing crazy off road. Never broke an axel in 20 yrs. that being said... now I’m changing everything as I plan on getting more aggressive.

You can go with 17" if you can find tires small enough. 15" wheels give you more tire sidewall which rides better on and off road. More cushion for the pushin.
