Angry 1988 jeep wrangler starting problems

I have replaced the ignition coil, wires, ignition module, distributor module, and carburetor, but still can't get the jeep to run. Last week it ran good, now it will crank but not run. Fuel goes into the system just fine. It is a 4.2L 6 cylinder. I am out of work and need my jeep to find a job, but nothing. I have checked for power on the distributor wires, some have low voltage others none? I have two back yard mechanics that have over 20 years on cars and can't figure out what the heck is wrong. Need help urgent. Oh yea, my wife's car just broke down!!! The jeep needs help? Any ideas?

Finally got it fixed. After replacing the coil, ignition module, and wires, I found out that a wire coming out of the oxygen censor was melted on the engine causing a short. After removing the wire it started right up.

1988 jeep starting issues

Here I am again. For the 3rd time the jeep and I are stuck on the side of the road. It just stopped running. Will crank up but will not turn over. I have replaced every electric component possible. Any one have any ideas?

The only thing left is the Electronic Control Unit (computer behind the dash) or a bad timing chain.

I am having the same problem with my '88 Wrangler YJ. The ECU and timing chain are very good ideas but I'm saving it as a "last resort". I recently repaired some burned wires at the junction connector on the firewall just under and to the right of the battery box. The jeep started and ran fine for some time. When it got hard to start just last week, I noticed another wire with the insulation burned off and I repaired it. Once again it ran and started fine. Now it is hard to start again. Something is shorting to cause this and there may be another wire that I can't see. My advice is to inspect these wires on your Jeep. It may be a cheap fix. I will post again on what I find.

On my 88, I had a piece of sending unit gasket drop into the gas tank and caused an intermittent fuel blockage. Left me on the side of the road scratching my head quite a few times til I dropped the tank and found that piece of gasket.
