1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ

Cutting back going down the road but isles like a sewing machine. What could be causing this? 1989 YJ 2.5L 5 sipped manual. Already replaced all vacuum lines so I know that’s not the issue. Noticed a smell of gas coming from the oil reservoir, some say it’s fuel injectors sticking others say it’s bad intake gasket. What could possibly be my problem?

What have you done as far as diagnostics?
Do you have a Factory Service Manual?

Good Luck, L.M.

For the intricacies of Fuel Injection you need a Factory Service manual.
Check out Bishko Books for a FSM on CD or Summit racing. Should be around $40.00.
The FSM has a section on diagnostic procedures. I didn't see a diagnostic procedure section in the Haynes manual.

What diagnostics have you done so far.

Good Luck, L.M.

I'm not well versed in FI, but a couple things come to mind.

Excessive fuel pressure....possible failing pressure regulator. To diagnose this you need a fuel pressure gauge. OTC makes a good one.

Possible leaking injectors? I don't know how to check them. If you replace them, get the stock size.

Intake manifold leak....spray around the edges with WD40.
Some posters say spray with carb cleaner. I'd be concerned about flammability.

With the Renix system I think the timing is controlled by the PCM.

My best suggestion is get a Factory Service Manual.

Good Luck, L.M.
