1989 YJ with 48000 original miles

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine ended up with this YJ, he is not "jeep guy" and would rather sell it than watch it deteriorate. It spent most of it's life in FL and then in a garage in RI for the last few years until he bought it. He drove it one winter and noticed the frame was losing it's nice black paint. I looked at it yesterday and have to say other than one small blemish on the hood this thing is immaculate. I'm trying to help him find out what a fair asking price would be and figured here was a good place to ask. Obviously we all know that it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. He would just like to list it for a fair price.

In California I would say set a starting price around 11,000. I know a lot of people will say that is to high, but where else are you going to find one as clean with that low mileage. Be sure and get a Carfax to verify the mileage is original. And any service receipts will help. But you should get close to that figure... Also when it is listed lots and lots of pictures, pictures of everything........

And is it a 4.0 or 2.5? 11,000 for a 2.5? Your outa your mind. 4.0 your still outa your mind but that's just me. Blue book for a stock yj like that might be 4,000 but I agree it's beautiful and worth more than 4,000. NOT 11,000

it's a 89 and a Sahara so that means 4.2 carbed engine, the issue is with it being as old as it is asking 11k is way too much even if it had 10 miles on it. I'd say 8 grand would be highest anymore than that you could get a low mile tj and at 11 grand you're a couple grand off from a tj rubi so keep that in mind. List it at 8 or 8500 and go from there.

Ask your self these things:
  • How rare it is to find in this condition
  • How much would it cost to restore to that shape
  • And finally what a new Jeep Wrangler costs

Here's some food for thought, let's say he listed it for 4k on eBay... I guarantee a bid war would commence and it would hit near 8K or more

Have a look what pristine CJ's are being listed at and your jaw will drop.

Thats a spectacular looking first gen sahara. If it runs and passes emissions, 10-11k is not a rediculous asking price.

You cant find them with good original fabric anymore, either.

oh I know, I am not saying that jeep is not worth anything. That thing is beautiful I just can't believe what people get for them. But their classics now so that's what it is. That interior is unreal. I just do not think its 11,000 dollars cool

I told him to list it for $11000, he can always come down on the price but obviously cant go up.

Speaking of CJs I saw a beautiful 86 the other day at a car show. Had all options and only 32000 miles on it. Looked like it just rolled out of the showroom.

My favorite Jeep. The early years YJ Sahara.
Only thing hurting you here is the fact it is an auto.

Looks like a beauty. I'm jealous.

I think $11k is a decent strategic asking price. I'd expect to see something like this ultimately sell in the $8k range.

YJ's are a great value, and tend to struggle a bit in market value.

For buyers looking for reasonable reliable weekenders, once you cross a certain price point the TJ's just make more sense. Reality is if I had $10k budget to find a reliable jeep, there would be lots of TJ options to consider.

For buyers looking for nostalgia, once you cross a certain price point the CJ's are likely to be more desirable. Reality is if I had $10k budget to find a nostalgic, classic jeep, there would be plenty of CJ options to consider.

Because of this YJ's remain a great JEEP value for a wide range weekend warrior jeep enthusiasts. Honestly I think the YJ sweet spot is under $8k with lots of reasonably viable options in the $3,000 - $6,000 range. In my opinion, it would take a "special" buyer to be interested in any YJ priced above $10k.

There is a 1990 Jeep Wrangler WRANGLER SAHARA on Ebay bidding ends today.
42500 miles, 6 cyl. current bid is 9102.32. 13 hours left. this would be a good comparable,
But it would not be smog legal in smog states, has the Weber set up, note: its missing the back glass on the hard top.

Very deceiving add... one place on the add it says 42499 miles another it says 78082, 36,000 mile difference, they do not say anything about the missing rear window or the fact it is not smogable, looks like it had the nutter bypass as well as the Weber carb and from the pix all the other smog has been removed. This dealer looks like a typical used car crook I meant to say dealer.....
Buyer be ware!!!!

Doesn't seem to be a good comp. That e-bay ad just screams slimy used car dealer. There must be $10.00 worth of armor-all on those tires, but the front bumper is faded. Wired aftermarket top, stripped/converted engine parts, inconsistent mileage claims, missing rear glass, missing tailgate tire stop, etc, etc.

Chances are the bids are faked to drive the cost up, I would approach this e-bay YJ very cautiously. Based on the ad and pics, it's not worth more than $3,500.

The scammers ARE out there. Had an eBay Jeep that was supposed to be in CA at a ridiculously low price. In conversation, said it had been parked as the picture showed, for some time. I figured out the street location and viewed it through satellite images. No Jeep to be found. In fact, the location didn't have enough room for it. Re-examined the ad photo and found it to be photoshopped.
