1991 YJ Renegade Towing

Hi guys,

I plan on towing a Uhaul 5x8 back to New Jersey from Washington State sometime this summer.

Anyhow, I have a hitch which looks to be a 1.25 Inch, and I'm wondering if I can tell if it is a Class 1 or Class 2. If it is a class 2, I think I'll be safe and be able to put a 2inch ball on it and call it good.

However. If it is a Class 1, I don't think I'll be able to tow a Uhaul Trailer.

Does anyone have experience with this? How can I tell what class the hitch is?

All together, the trailer will weigh about 900lbs, my motorcycle will be around 600 lbs + a couple boxes.

I looked on the towing receiver itself, I found a worn out, non-readable sticker. At least, I think that is what I found.

The hitch should have info stamped on it. You may need to wipe it clean or use chalk.

I think MAX tow for a YJ is only 2,000lbs. That is likely your limiting factor, and your plans may be approaching that limit.

U-Haul may have a policy regarding the hitch as well. Your photo looks like a class I, which are typically designed to support accessories such as bike racks. You could probably look underneath and tell better.

If it's a class I , I bet u haul could install a class II for a reasonable cost.

That looks like a class 1 to be honest. Too risky.

Did you make the trip yet? I'm towing a 6' x 10' flatbed from CT to CO in a little over a week and would like to know how your Jeep did.
