89 Cargo Net for Pets???

I have looked and cannot find a Smittybuilt Cargo net for a 89 YJ, or something similar from a different company.

Has anyone had any luck with these?

I will guess that it is because of my slanted bars, so if there is a way I can mount a newer one with little fabrication, please let me know. My dog jumped in the Jeep with me today and I felt bad I could not take him with me.

The top has been taken off for the season and would like to take the pup along for the ride

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

Rig a tether system from the roll bar, I have a 100 lb chocolate lab that likes to hang over the edgeget cable and ferals and a clip to attach to his collar. Got my stuff from an ACE hardware, much cheaper. Just make sure you allow enough slack to allow your dog to lay down if you run a back seat?

The tether that steves92 shows is clever and inexpensive. If I had a dog and wanted to take him in an open Jeep, that's what I'd use. I'd attach the tether to a doggie harness rather than the dogs collar. If the dog is secured by his collar and tries to jump out or falls out he might be strangled by the time you get the vehicle stopped and can help Fido.

Good Luck, L.M.

I had a pup and a truck with a camper shell.
It was summer and I stopped at a store.
I attached him in back where he could just stick his head out with the hatch open.
Hadn't gone twenty feet and I heard a yelp.
There he was dangling outside the tailgate by his collar.

Happened just once.
Had that German Shepherd 14 years and before he was two he was smarter than me.
But he couldn't drive a stick worth a damn.

+1 on the harness.
I have a RoughWear harness for my boxador.
In my JKU, I keep a 3’ heavy duty leash attached around the soundbar.
She can lean out windows, lay down, or her favorite... leaning forward with her front paws on the console (I installed a tire tread cover on the console).

Nice guys!

Thanks... it looks as if I will have to try to fabricate something, if I do, I will post it!

Gonna have to do this for my 88 as well. Just gotta modify it to work with the slanted bars instead.

Thanks!

Steves92’s idea has me thinking.
How about the same type of rig, but attached to the floor?
It may be a little less obtrusive. And not flail about when topless.
Maybe even a quick release where it attaches at the floor?
Just an idea.
I think I’ll try it.
If it works, I’ll suppply pics and details.

Thanks for the inspiration.

That would work, my cable system gives me no issues in the wind when topless. It’s heavy enough cable that it just barely swings. I also clip it back on to the main cable that goes from side to side when the dog stays home

Back when I had my '91 and took my dog with me, I used as standard PU tailgate net and fastened it inside the rear window opening with the top up but rear window out. I wish I could remember better details on it.

IIRC the top was fastened to the rear top bow, but I don't remember what I fastened the sides to. It was usually on trips that he went with me (always) and I usually drove my truck which he loved since it had a bench front seat. That was over 20 years ago, still miss that boy.
