90 - YJ Runs hotter on HWY then around city

Hello All,

I have a 90 Wrangler YJ - 5 speed.. 4.2L

When I drive around town the temp hits like 190 but when on the highway it runs like 210.. I am thinking that maybe the fan clutch is on its way out.. It should run cooler on the highway then in town , RIGHT???

I would like to get rid of the clutch all together & put a solid spacer in its place, any ideas???

sounds like fan clutch to me. the extra air from highway is slowing it down if its weak.

Sounds kind of normal to me.....the temp gauges in these are not all that accurate. I changed the sending unit a few months ago cause it was reading 150, now it reads between 200 and 210..

Sounds more like the radiator to me! Around town the fan clutch is working, less revs so less heat. On the highway most cooling is coming from the airflow through the radiator not the fan, more revs more heat.

If the radiator was partially blocked then the heat would rise. I would try a good flush out first. Easy to do and costs nothing......

XX2 ^^You don't even need the fan on the highway if air can pass through the radiator fins and your system is circulating properly.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
