90 YJ Shift Problems

I have a 90 4.2 5 Speed that is very difficult to put in gear or shift between gears, but only after driving for a while. When it is cold there are no issues. From researching this forum it sounds like the slave is going bad. Does that sound right? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

You are correct that is a bad slave cylinder I'm going through the same issue. I just have not had the time to replace my slave/clutch. Yet

The bad news is that the slave cylinder on your "90 YJ is in a tough spot. You will need to remove the transfer case and transmission to get to it. If you get that far you should probably replace the clutch at the same time since you have already invested the labor. This is a full weekend job and will likely require a second set of hands.

I took my to a dealer about a year ago (bad idea) just because I didn't have the time to do it myself and it was gong to get cold outside soon. They charged me 500 to drop the transmission and another 500 to put it back up.

My total including that was about 1600 though, I'd say that if you had the time and knew what you were doing to just do it yourself, especially if you had a friend who was willing to help.

I talked with a very good 4x4 shop by me about switching to an external slave. They quoted me $1200 for a new clutch, mc, external slave and new bell housing and internal parts. I plan on doing it myself, but if I couldn't I'd rather pay $1200 and have an external slave than replace a part that has a reputation of not lasting like the original.

Great feedback. Thanks everyone. I will probably end up hiring someone to do it as I'm not confident in my ability to do it correctly.
Good idea of switching to an external slave.
