91 YJ Soundbar Location

I just bought a 91 YJ and the speaker/soundbar is directly above my head - and I bump it while driving. I would love to relocate it to the back seat area, but the rear roll bar section is narrower and the soundbar won't fit. What are my options? Are there soundbars that are shorter?

They're probably pretty much all made to fit above the driver. You could either modify it so that it fits where you want it, or you could go with some kind of individual rear speaker setup. Or if you're handy, you could build your own. The possibilities are endless.

If you search this forum for "sound bar" there is a fellow that made his own thin sound bar that fits right above the front seat driver & passenger heads. It works for him. I don't remember what seats he has or if he stated how tall he is.

I have Bestop seats that sit a bit higher than stock and I am 5'10". Any sound bar would interfere with my head. My '87 has the stock roll bar.

You may be able to use a "family" roll bar from a later model Wrangler where the rear bars follow the contour of the roof rather than going down at an angle. Then you can mount the sound bar behind the main loop without blocking the view from your rear view mirror.

Good Luck, L.M.

That's not true lucky. Unfortunately the yj roll bar angles outward so is skinnier than the front roll bar, they seemed to figure it out on the tj's thus making it the same in back as the front, so your talking probably 6 inches smaller in back than in front. Angles out as it goes back towards the rear.

I have the stock old style roll bar so I am unsure about the exact contours of the family style roll bar. I still expect that a person could make a homemade (custom) sound bar that would fit.

Good Luck, L.M.

Hmm, I have bestop seats and I'm currently 6'3", but my head doesn't hit the sound bar... I guess I'm mostly legs

Here are some alternatives

http://www.sidebysideutvparts.com/pr...pods-pair.html
http://www.selectincrements.com/homepage.html
http://www.vdpusa.com/jeep/rear-sound-wedge-cj-yj.php

Depending on the diameter of the center rollbar there may be more options @ those links that are used for Polaris, etc.

I have a couple of the versa-pods in the link that IRQ posted. I needed the space where the front speakers are to run the roll cage, so that the cage didn't interfere with rolling the windows. I put a couple of those pods on the trans tunnel in front of the shifter and pointed them out. Not the most ideal spot, but they work pretty well considering.

Thanks for the comments. I think I am going to remove the soundbar and install speaker pods under the dash behind the shifter.

I made this box for behind the shifter. . It's more of a sub woofer, bot you could put regular 5x5 or a 6x9.

I didn't like the speakers right over my head either, so I made this. My wife sewed the padded cover for me. It fits between the family roll bars and passengers don't hit their heads either.
