95 YJ Sahara Find

New to the forum and considering buying my first Jeep. I found a 95 Sahara in green with all original interior that looks in great shape. It was repainted and new decals 3 years ago. Everything looks great from the pictures and there is no rust. The seller just had the tranny rebuilt 8,000 miles ago with a new clutch. There are 145k driving miles but odometer reads 260k because it was pulled behind an RV. He says the Jeep runs great and gave a long list of things he replaced and has all the paperwork. A/C also works. He wants $7k for it, does that sound like a good deal? I figure I’ll have to put another $2k into it for lift, rims and tires. I’d post a link of it but I’m afraid someone might snatch it up from me, ha!

Considering that if you bought a $2000.00 YJ, it'd cost more than $5K to make it that nice, you're probably starting ahead of the game at $7K.

As a negotiator, I'd offer $5K and quickly go to $5500.00. Then I'd stumble up to $6K and see if that does the job. Judging how the seller reacts will tell you how close you are.
At $6K, I'd ask if he wants cash or a cashiers check, even if he hasn't agreed to selling at that price. (It's called the assumed close). If he gets mad & stomps off, say "Wait! Wait! That's all my wife will allow me to spend". "I'll ask my boss if he'll lend me the rest. Will you take $6250.00?"

If it's as nice as you say, it might be worth $7K. I wouldn't pay that much because I don't need a Jeep to be that nice up front.
I paid $2K for mine and fixed it up as I was able. For me that was the way to go because I have the tools, the garage and the experience.

BTW, for that price, I'd want a hard top and full doors.

Good Luck, L.M.

Thanks for the reply L.M.. He originally asked $7,300 and I offered $6k, he said no thanks. I asked to meet me halfway and he replied $7k is the lowest he’ll go. He already turned down $6,800 from a neighbor and I believe him.

It does have full doors but no hard top, he sold that. Comes with redone soft top and bimini top. I don’t have tools to do the work myself so I need to buy a Jeep that’s ready to be driven.

Price seems fair, but with out photos it's hard to be sure on that assumption.

I make it a habit to not lowball people that have their things listed for a fair price, I will actually ignore a buyer if he does this as a principal.
Obviously a fair price changes depending on where you live, but that price looks like hes just trying to break even.

If you do not have tools or skills to work on the jeep your self (and if you are not wanting to learn) then you should definitely take it somewhere and have it thoroughly checked over. Even it is cost you some cash it would be worth it to see what a good shop tells you they find. What are similarly equipped jeeps in your area selling for (or at least what is their asking price).

First things first....as common as it is, the "towed behind an rv" line is hogwash.... you don't tow with the ign on so the odometer doesn't register towed miles AND 90% of folks don't get anywhere that many miles towing w an rv anyhow....
That said mileage really doesn't mean anything... I have a 94 yj w 260,000 in great shape, a 04 tj w 210,000 in amazing like new condition, and I just bought a 97 tj yesterday w 130,000 that is a ragged out pos....

You can either wait until he drops the price and risk loosing what appears to be a real nice Jeep or pay the $7K and drive it home.

Gottagofast makes a good point about the mileage. When you go to look at it ask the seller how could the Jeep rack up the difference with the key in the 'off' position.

Good Luck, L.M.

But because it's not a digital odometer can't the miles run when being towed? And he is the second owner for 10 years, it was the original owner that towed the car behind an RV.

Have a look at the frame

Check near shackles, crossmember above fuel tank, floorboards, etc

As you peak at these areas other things will become apparent if there are further issues.

If everything looks to be kosher snag it.

Then the hogwash has followed it through more than one owner.....
95 wrangler has a vss... NOT a cable.... vss requires power from the ecm to operate....

The miles are from driving, not towing.....

I once looked at a jeep w 110,000 miles on it that the seller claimed all but 10,000 were from "towing it behind this motor home right here" It was for sale too and only had 20,000 miles on it..... I told him it was a pretty good trick to rack up 5 times the mileage on the jeep as the rv while towing....

That is correct, my 95 when towed does not rack up miles on odometer , only on tires and bearings.

My '87 has a cable driven (mechanical) speedo. It'll register miles when being towed with the key off.
The electronic speedos started in 1992 I believe. I don't see how they can register miles with the key in the 'off' position.

Sometimes people make mistakes and sometimes people lie.
Listen to Gottagofast. He's telling the truth.

Good Luck, L.M.

Just remember they’re not making those anymore so when you find a really nice one you better hang onto it

Thanks for everyone's input. I decided to go ahead and buy it. Drove 100 miles home, the engine was solid the whole time at 70mph and transmission shifts like butter. Now she's in her new home.

Very nice Jeep. Hard to believe it has anywhere near that kind of mileage on it.

Maybe he got it backwards. The Jeep towed the RV?

I think it was a great buy, I don't think I would have the heart to molest it if it was mine, it's a survivor. congratulations on the find and purchase.

Thanks!

I felt the same but I will keep the original wheels and can always change back to the standard suspension. I'm putting a 4" lift with 285/17/16 KO2's, 16" Pro Comp 69 Series black wheels. Everything else will stay original.

After looking at those pics, if you were to find an original YJ Hard top and put in an automatic trans, in that condition, "I" would give you $10,000 for it. It is actually in showroom condition, from what I can see from the pics. Great Buy!!!!!

The new top and hardware alone is upwards of $800, so that’s a pretty good value there too. The interior is beautiful. I love the Sahara seats.
