Aftermarket Headunit help! Please....

I purchased a Marine headunit for my YJ for its big makeover and apparently that was a bad idea... i spent $125 on a unit that died after 4 months of light element-beating conditions and isnt covered under Kenwoods warranty.

So... any advice on a replacement unit to go with?

Does anyone have a metal backing or enclosure to protect the back of their headunit?

Mine is open to the environment as it sits on the bottom of the dash and there is no backing under there to protect it from the elements. I am assuming all YJs are like this unless I and all the YJs i have seen are missing this part?

Many other little goodies!
Swap to a 4BT diesel in the future? Most likely.

They actually make an enclosure for stereos on boats, it is enclosed all the way around and has a flip-up door in the front to access the controls.I have seen them on Craigslist.

I have an alpine (non marine) and I haven't had any issues with it. I have the tuffy lock it up that sits between the two front seats. It is mounted in there. Had it six or seven months now.

The radio is full of dirt and I hose the cab out without being careful and it still keeps on running. I even had rain pour into it all night long, because I left the cover open and no top on. I thought for sure it would be dead, let it dry out and it fired right up.

My buddy runs the same model on his boat and has no issues.

As to the cover. No YJs came with a panel under the dash but I have seen guys who have fabricated their own. Instead of doing the whole dash I'd try to encapsulate just the radio.

Honestly I think the radio you used is sub par. It should have lasted more than four months.my alpine retailed for about triple the price you payed. A better quality radio may last longer.

The tuffy box may be a good solution for you. With the lid closed it does protect the radio from water intrusion quite a bit. Plus you can use the radio hole for all kinds of stuff. I have a custom switch panel there that will control all of my lights, winch relay and heated seats when I am finished with the interior.

Sorry I don't have any pics of the tuffy box currently.

Now that you mention it Mowrangler my buddy with the boat has a cover on the front but it doesn't encapsulate the whole radio. Here is a link to one that does. Found this with a quick google.

Jensen Water Resistant Gimbal Mount Marine Radio Housing

That is actually the exact enclosure i was thinking about doing but i assume it wont fit in the stock spot anymore? Any advice there? I have already created a spot for my light switches and have the winch remote run up through the dash and locks in the glove box so I dont really have anything that would be worth filling that hole with.

Maybe relocating the radio to an overhead position may help your problem. They have just the cover style faceplate covers but there is also a complete enclosure available but I dont think it will fit in the dash.

Unless you need something really expensive, get a cheap JVC or Sony from Bestbuy when the go on sale. I got mine for $39 and it works great (see garage for pics). Haven't had the top off yet (just bought it in November). Figure if it goes bad or gets stolen I'm not out to much.

X2 on the cheap radio. I picked up a factory jeep cassette player from the yard for like $5. If I install a real radio it'll be in a center console. Too much stuff stolen. On a side note:

As a former salesman and installer, I can tell you most "marine" shit is a scam. It's white. Who cares? It's no more water proof than regular product. Same polypropylene injection molded cones. Same butyl rubber surrounds. Same cd slots, same grated housings. My marine cover sits where it belongs, in the top of my tool box. Who wants to flip up a door to use their radio? I'm too busy trying to text or floss while I drive.

a marine cover actually suits me well... i rarely adjust anything on it when im driving it. It typically is at the volume i want it at and i have a USB drive that has all the music i want to listed to. I am debating taking it in to the custom shop I took my car to and see if they could make the dash work for the marine pod and then just throw a cheap unit in there.

My issue is the interior and dash are bedlined, i treated the gauges with ACF-50, and the seats are marine vinyl. I dont want to have to worry about what gets wet and what doesnt.

P.S. i dont have a center console and I love not having one! Ill never go back... the essentials are locked in my locking glove box or in the ammo cans bolted to the inside of my tailgate.
