am i being ripped off????

so i got a jeep and a problem. i bought an 87 yj 2.5 for 2200 and it ran fine for 3 months than it crapped out. the compression is bad and my mechanic says he might have to do the piston rings and my injector is bad so that needs to be replaced too. he also replaced my spark plugs and my crank sensor. so far he wants $300 for the plugs and crank sensor and he said if its the rings and the injector its going to be more. he said in total its going to be "less than a grand" am i being screwed over? he is my friends dad and is supposed to be giving me the "special price" am i being screwed?

300 for spark plugs and a crank sensor seems steep. As for the rings and injectors those arnt easy or fun jobs so the mechanics prices reflect that. I would say the average mech would charge u more than he will For the rings.

It's a 24 yr. old YJ. Things are going to go wrong at any given time. You didn't mention the mileage. If he is willing to repair it stick with him, at least you know that he's not just adding parts that aren't needed. All things being equal, there's more to go wrong on a 2.5 than a 4.2. Don't be surprised that once he gets in there he's going to find more wrong with it, that's just what happens. If you have an auto. it will also cost you more over the long haul. I don't think he's screwing you over because he's actually trying to save you some money. He could have easily said that you need a full tune-up. He didn't. It seems like he's just addressing what has to be done now. However, down the road you're going to be putting at least another grand into it. That's normal. Just be ready.

You don't just do the piston rings. If the rings are shot, they're more than likely going to be some other mechanical problems.
You have to tear the engine down, remove the crank, rods and pistons. If you're doing that, you might as well do all new bearings, have the crank checked out, replace the oil pump and pickup, do a new timing set, etc. Chances are if the rings are gone, the cylinder walls are not in great shape, either. So that means honing the cylinders.

Not trying to scare you, but you've got to be realistic here.

$300 for the plugs and crank sensor is a little on the high side but within reason unless you're good buddies with the guy. Sounds about comparable to the shop I work in, and we charge relatively high prices for the area. You're not being ripped off as long as it's not being misdiagnosed.

To be honest it is kind of a random list of parts he's throwing at it. I might try to get a second opinion, even if it's awkward, it's your money on the line. Low compression could also be a blown head gasket or burned valves. Certainly could be rings too, not saying it's not. Just kinda weird at 90k unless the motor was beaten on. But I'm here and you're there so if you trust him then fine. And just beware that if it's any one of those things, it's often all of those things. Good luck.

I have not paid for vehicle service in several years, so I cannot really tell you if the price is fair or not. I would recommend to invest in a decent set of tools and a shop manual for your Jeep. I have done everything on my vehicles that I could in the past and I am currently attempting to rebuild the manual transmission. It does help to have friends with knowledge and access to tools you may not have handy. Also helps to invest in pizza and soda for said friends.

The pride and sense of accomplishment when you do your own maintainance/repairs comes in even better on the trail when you need to do a repair in the field. Before you know it, you are the guy that is being paid with pizza to help others out. Good luck and keep us posted.

Jeff

I would not pay $300 for plugs and the crank sensor. that is way steep. Parts alone should only run around $45.00 ($12 for plugs and $33 for sensor) so this guy is charging you around $255 for labor. and it should only take about 1 hour tops to swap out plugs and your CPS. Not a chance. If you dont feel comfortable doing the work your self id fine some one else fast this guy is a rip off.

Good Luck..
