antitheft radio ideas

im looking to upgrade the crumby old pioneer i have in the heep to a nice marine mp3 with ipod deck..however being that it is a jeep and i dont have locking doors and most likely will have the top/doors off most of the time anyway im looking for ideas to deter theft..

now i know most decks come with a detachable faceplate and thats all fun and nice but i was hoping for something else..

i know ivault makes a locking plate for the TJs but they dont ahve anything for the yjs =(

im thinking about making a custom cage and welding the cage into the dash and possibly using torx screws to hold it in. im not too worried about having to grind some metal later if need be to access the deck for issues lol

There are lockable center consoles too.. You take it out of the dash and put it in the center console instead.

Quadratec Exclusive 13104.01 - iVault® Security Floor Console for 76-95 Jeep® CJ & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

Check that out, just an idea.

In my 93 the radio mounts to a bracket that then mounts to the dash. Only way a theft is getting the radio is to take the jeep with it.

Is a nice radio necessary? What about just getting a crappy one with a tape deck? No one would want that.

Removable face. A thief is not going to steal something he has to put money into. I put my facee in the insta trunk and have no worries.

How about mounting it in the glovebox or console?
My friends and I used to do this on classic cars we had so we wouldn't have to hack the dashes up.
Find a nice chunk of styrofoam and cut it to fit the contours of the box, cut out or use a heat gun to make a recess in the chunk that encapsulates the head unit and use double-sided tape or small blobs of rtv to hold this into place inside the glovebox or console. Once closed up, most people wouldn't know better. We usually had remotes for the volume, station, etc.
I would think that the aux port for the ipod could also be wired to a plug placed anywhere on the dash or console you would choose.
I wish I had some pics to offer-it was always a slick system!
Now for hiding those kickin' subs or that mega amp in the back of a Jeep, well...

My thought is to leave the cruddy one in the dash then install one in the over head Console from Tuffy. I only need the one compartment unit but the two compartment unit Overhead Security Console for Jeep Wrangler, TJ, YJ, CJ-7, CJ-5on looks better IMO.

Just thought of this, with the dual you might be able to hide the iPod and other small items in there.

Wonder where the wiring would have to be run...

my radio is zipp tied to the bottom of the dash, but its a piece of crap, if someone stole it they would probly bring it back.
I like the glove box ideal.

My radio is a four channel amp that a cheap mp3 player to. the amp is mounted in the center console. When I get out i just drop the mp3 in the console and lock it. I left the empty hole in the dash as a deterrent so would be thieves would think the radio was already gone.

I know this may not be quite what you were looking for as far as advice goes, but just.. think about it.

I have a fairly expensive Kenwood head unit in my Jeep. It has a detachable face that I detached about twice and decided it was a PITA. If they want it, they can get a replacement faceplate easily enough.

What I have done for the last 20 years to deter theft is simple.
1) I don't leave bait (things of value) in my vehicle when I park it (phone, GPS, camera, purse)

2) and most importantly, I keep a $50 deductible on my Comprehensive insurance.

I look at it this way, if it's going to happen, it's GOING to happen. If it does, it's only $50 out of my pocket and it's fixed along with all of the damage they did getting it out of there.
AND this benefits in other ways as well. Comp coverage is there if your Jeep is vandalized, top slashed, tires slashed, someone hits you in the parking lot and drives away, a cat pees in it and ruins your upholstery, rock breaks your windshield and so on.

Rather than having to worry about it all of the time, just insure it with a low deductible, keep your receipts, relax and enjoy!

BTW, Jensen has some really nice weather resistant units.

Like I said, look into dropping your comp deductible to WAY low and it will help you relax. Is a whole lot easier than building a gorilla cage around your dash.
