Basic Mechanic Class

Right now I am in Central Indiana.
I am a single female, with a 1995 Jeep Wrangler Rio, that needs some mechanical love.

I don't know how to work on my own cars; I used to help the boys when I was a kid (worked on Nova's, Trans Am's, Camero's) but that's been a minute and I have long forgotten most of what they taught me.

I would LOVE to take a basic mechanic class.....but I have no idea where to find such a thing.
Or if I could shadow someone (while they work, let them teach type of program)
Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Hmmmmmm.... I do not know of any such class. Neat idea though. If I hear of something I will give you a shout out though.

I am not a mechanic by any means, and it had been many(like 25) years since I did anything more than just change oil on anything, until I started building and working on my ol'97 TJ, but with this forum, other websites like Stu's and of course youtube, it is pretty easy to get the info you need.

Don't be afraid to tear into it and use these sites, but be sure you have time and money in case something goes wrong. Broken bolts, seized bolts and nuts and such happen a lot on older rigs, especially here in the rust belt, and will cause you to make a few extra trips to the parts store.

Your community technical colleges should have a mechanics type course or you could just hook up with your local jeep/off-road club there and they'd most likely teach YA anything you wanna know

This is why I was asking. With several Jeep Clubs in the area, there are folks that have wrenching parties and such and lots of good advise.

The community college thing sounds like a good idea if someone has the time and money.

What kind of work is your YJ in need of?

Joining a car club and getting hands on experience working on your own or watching others is the best way to learn. That's how I learned everything

Both the community college and 4wd club are good places to start, but what I have found out is that with a good shop book and a desire to learn you can do a lot by just diving in. The nice thing about these jeeps is they are very easy to work on, you just need to get over the fear of jumping in. It sounds like you have the right attitude to begin starting off on some easy mods and building up as your confidence grows.

There sure is. 2 come to mind right off the top of my head.

First is Hoosier Wranglers. This is a new club of Wrangler folks that like you have a lot of "not so knowledgeable people", but come to find out, there is a lot of knowledge in this group and there is no club fee as of now. It is FREE!!!

The second is Indy Jeep Junkies. A slightly older club and there is club fees but a lot of good folks and a lot of knowledge.

Hmmmmmmm....... an hour north of Indy, huh. Maybe Anderson, Tipton, or somewhere in between?

Hoosier Wranglers is doing a run next month out to Badlands in Attica that will start with a "Tech" session at a Jeep dealership. Might be a lot of good info for you at the session and a great place to ask questions and such.

Oh, and there is another group called Indy Off Road I think. I have never met any of them that I know of, but have been helped a bit by some of them on the different forums.

Once again, these old Wranglers are pretty easy to work on, except for the rust. Hahahahaha!!!! If there is something in particular you want to work on, there are so many write ups on this and other forums, and TONS of videos on youtube for everything from replacing hubs, pulling shafts, installing bumpers and even one on how to replace muffler bearings. Hahahahaha!!!!!
