Bought a '95

Thanks everyone for the input on how or if to transport this Jeep. Here is the original Ebay pic. Paid $3500 for it, has 190,000 miles on it. Can post more pics after I clean it up and make it my own. Drove it 855 miles from VA to WI and it performed well, even with 4 cyl and 33s (5 spd). Struggled some climbing steep grades at speed through the mountains. The PO asked if I wanted a pair of full steel doors with it. Of course I did. They looked good to me. Other bonuses not in the Ebay post: swing away tire carrier bumper with hitch, front Warn winch bumper (looks like it used to have a winch on it), whole tub is bedlined, rust free truck, frame is clean and solid, new never used soft top with hardware, locking center console and a rear storage box trunk-thingy for the tailgate area. No mechanical leaks even after the 855 mile drive. Not sure what brand or lift leaf springs, has 1.25" lift shackles, new pro comp shocks and steering stabilizer, sway bar quick disconnects, stereo and sound bar, 2 new mirrors for doors off driving. The track bar has been removed. It has an aftermarket diff cover, not sure why. I may count the teeth to see if it has had a gear swap or LSD, it performed better than my previous 4 cyl TJ with 33s. 5th gear was useless on the TJ, but the YJ can make use of the 5th gear.

Congrats on your new YJ. It looked old great...full doors definitely was worth it if they're not posted on the listing.
I'm wondering since you drove it for so many miles with the 33s. How fast did you go on the flats. And if it's not regeared what will you go to. I'm asking bcuzz I'm currently running 33s but thinking of going to 31s due to weight.
Thanks

Once I felt comfortable on the flats I went around 70 mph. I didn't try to top it out though. If it isn't regeared I am going to keep running 33s. It will need a new set of tires sometime soon. Too much lift to go with 31s. I might look into 33x10.50. I don't know how much lighter they would be, but might help. Also, I suspect the aluminum rims I have are pretty light.

When I had the TJ I had a set of 31s on the stock rims and some 33s on some used 15 x 8 aluminum rims. I swapped the 33s on before off roading, and sometimes just for the heck of it. That TJ had 2" of lift.

I'm sure yours is regeared. I can only get upto 60mph barely and that's my top out speed. That's why I was considering going to 31s.
What do you think it look like with 31s too awkward on my jeep.

It's a mystery then. I'll still check my gears, maybe they are stock 4.10s. My TJ had 4.10s and drove as you described, and I believe that there was only the one ratio available for the 4 banger YJs, also 4.10, so you would not have lower numerically gearing, assuming your gears are factory.

Just remembered, keep in mind that your speedometer is off with the bigger tires. With 33s somewhere between 5 and 10 mph. There are probably a ton of free online mph calculators to see how much. So you are going faster than the speedo says. But the useable 5th gear remains an issue.

what kind of rpm were you running at 70? i would be willing to bet it has been regeared if you can run 70 with 33's. im running 4.88s with the 4 banger and 33s i can do 70 fairly easily but i dont think it would have done too well with the old 4.10s.

I'll have to check. I didn't look at the tach much. I'll also jack up the rear and count drive shaft vs wheel rotations and see if isn't 4:1 ratio. If different, i'll pull the cover and count teeth.

That could be why the lower speed on the speedometer. I'm not gear head I've got no clue when it comes to gear/regear. I never had to worry about that before always ran stock tires even with my Chevy trucks and Rams.

Congrats on the new jeep. Looks really clean and sounds like all in all you got a pretty good deal.

Okay, I checked my gear ratios. I have the stock 4.10s. everything else looks stock on the Jeep, except maybe a high flow muffler but it still has a catalytic converter. So basically a stock 4 banger and gears.

Another thought, my 33s, especially the rear, are very worn. That is quite a reduction in diameter on a mud tire, but don't know it's enough to reduce weight and performance. Would a very worn be maybe like a 32? Not sure.

Did your YJ come with the dual diaphragm brake booster?

Never heard of it so I looked at Google images. No, mine appears to be a single or typical booster as compared to the ones that have two "sections" to them. Looks like a neat upgrade.

The late build 95's came with the TJ style dual diaphragm booster with YJ master cylinder. I converted to full TJ style booster. The Factory YJ system is complete bolt on. Mine was cheaper but required welding.
