Bought an 89 YJ what should I do to it

So I bought this YJ yesterday that has lived it's whole life in Virginia. The tub is ridiculous clean on the thing.

It has a 3" lift (not sure what kind), trying to figure out what type of wheels would look good on it, and also a tire size that would fit with the lift that's on it.

What do you guys think.

Nice islander! I would get some kind of big MT tires. Just do what suits your needs. I just got done plasti-dipping behind the front seats and removing the rear seat, because I need to train my lab for retrieving in water, and didnt want to ruin the carpet. It cost me a total of $17 for the three cans of plasti dip from home depot, and only took 3 hours.

Check out, "Tom95YJ". Look him up and his build thread. He started out with that very model and his rig is pretty kick ass!

Looks like you got a sweet deal! Cool...

Nice find! Begin with the end in mind and work towards it. You have a ton of options.

Looks good....
Answer to your question.... Spend lots of money!!! It never seems to end!!!
Winch, bumpers, bigger tires, more lift, seat covers, console, stereo, rock rails, fuel injection, and then repairing anything that might be wrong.....

Forgot to mention after you get it all done you have to sell it... To pay for the divorce, cause you spent all your time and money on that darned old Jeep, But in the end it is worth it, I think......

A woman can feed and love you, but a jeep... Well a jeep is a jeep, and it's better than anybody else's jeep!

Nice find!!!
Those blue Islanders really are sweet looking.
The springs and shackles look new so it appears you have a suspension lift. Looks like you have a Transfer Case (TC) drop too. You might be able to squeeze 33s or at least 32s.

I don't see a military wrap on the springs or white painted shocks, so I'm ruling out bds and ome.

I have a 2" bds with 5/8" shackles and it nets almost 4" of lift. I've been running 31x10.5 GY DTs. But I have so much clearance I'm gong up to 33x10.5 KO2's when they come out in October.

Those blue islanders are the ultimate summer jeeps. Love the retro good looks.

Where in Mass are you?

Good luck. She's beautiful.

Thanks guys, you are correct, it has a TC drop. I was told the lift was a 3" lift. I wish I know what it was, almost looks like a Black Diamond lift.

I totally lucked out on the tranny, it's a 5 SPD AX-15 not the Peugeot, thank god. I forgot to check it before I bought it.

The brake boosta went, sooo right now I'm redoing all of the brakes, including brake booster, master cylinder, calipers, flex hoses, brake rotors and pads. I'll check the rear brake shoes out too.

You said that the tub looks pretty clean, I'd really check her out and give her some TLC if and where needed just so that's it's perfect. Also not sure on how exactly you feel about the old islander decals, but if it were me I'd try my best to keep them on. I think that they look sick, not to mention I've never seen one with those decals in the flesh.

Oh also, if your not going to swap out the front bumper I'd buy some tow hooks for it, mainly just for looks, although sometimes they may be needed, but not usually in a jeep.

I was thinking tow hooks too. As I need to replace parts on this thing, I'll be expanding our website YJ catalog.

What wheels and tires do you guys think I should toss on there. I was thinking 15X8 with 4" of back space window Ds with a set of 32" muds. I'm not sure it 33s would fit with only 3" of lift.

If there are any cool looking wheels that come to mind post them up, I'll check them out.

Any of you guys running 33s with 3" of lift on a YJ ?

Tony

I'd go through the whole thing and check all wearable parts, bushings, hoses, fluids, etc etc.

So I found out this YJ has a 4" RC lift in it. The front springs were marked Rough Country 8010. From what I've read I should be able to slip 33s under it. It has 30" tires on it right now. Here's a pic of the amount of clearance that I have from the top the rear tire to the bottom of the flare. There's 3", if I bump up-to 33s they should only add another 1 1/2" to the sidewall height, it this correct?

That is nice looking, I think I have the same jeep, I just bought mine also. I can't believe that thing was listed for 7gs and it needs brakes. Where are you located? Those tires look to be in good shape I would just run them.

In all fairness the thing ran awesome while test driving it, the brake booster let go on the way home...just one of those things.

It's already lifted, and it rust free. I'm in NH, so Wranglers in general in this shape are unheard of.

The brakes became really hard to press, and the engine started to run rough due to lack of vacuum on reserve every time I tried to stop.

Hope to get it swapped out tonight, so I can drive this thing...lol
