Burning Man: over 7000 ft & into dusty place

I'm told I'll need to tweak my carb to get over 7k feet; not towing anything. How do I do that? Pix appreciated.

Also, is replacing the air filter enough or should I rig some pantyhose over the carb intake? I may be missing the air cleaning assembly; anyone have a good pix of what things around there should look like?

You do not need to tweak your carb for 7000 feet unless you're racing it. You'll be fine. Think of all the older cars that go over the I70 pass every single day. Lots of them are flatlanders, and they do just fine.

The tweak is to replace the needles in your carb with bigger ones. Not worth it for a day or two.

Why would you be missing the air cleaner? You don't have something like this on top of your engine (not wrangler, just first one I grabbed):

If you don't have an air cleaner you should really fix that ASAP. Daily driving will destroy everything, much less a desert run.

I don't have something that looks like that on top. I'll walk downstairs and take a picture and post it. Since the wrecker places don't have anything for me, what sort of after-market carb can I pick up from Kragen? I'm leaving in 48 hours....

I will happily zip out and buy a whole new after-market carb to protect my Jeep from the Burning Man dust...

No, you're fine. Quit worrying.

That, um, guitar shaped metal cover is your air cleaner housing. If you undo the butterfly bolt and lift off the cover you'll see an air cleaner in there.

Might be time to replace it, or it might be just fine.

If it was me, I'd check to see that its there, tighten everything back down, go to burning man, get stoned, and when I managed to get back home, I'd go to my oil change place and swap out the oil and filters.

DO NOT put a stocking on the carburetor or anything like that. You'll cause more problems that you solve.

You know, Burning Man is in an inhospitable desert. But it's not mars. Lots of us drive this sort of thing all the time. If you follow another Jeep up a fire road, you get a lot of dust.

I live at 5,000 feet and drive up over 7,000 all the time. Lots of my vehicles have had stock carburetors.

On the other hand, stop-n-go traffic on the 280 will kill your car. And my patience.

It's all what you're used to.

Have fun!

This is the second forum in as many years that I've been involved in where there was a thread about Burning Man.
