Buying First Jeep

Hey guys and girls I'm looking to buy my first jeep as a trail toy/daily and was wondering what to look for. One of the wranglers I was looking at is a 1987 with 150K miles. It's recently recieved new brakes, power boost, full tune up, new shocks and a steering stabilizer. It also has a 6'' lift on 37x14.50, and comes with a hard top and bikini top. Full and half doors. Supposedly it needs a new clutch and with the fact that I'm new to the Jeep world I was wondering how much that would set me back and how difficult the removal/installation of the new unit would be. He's asking $3800 and I'm fairly certain that I'd be able to drop him down to atleast $3300. What do you guys think?

The 1987 can be a great base for a really nice build-up, but some of the factory stuff is not as popular. Especially the Puegeot transmissions they used.

I would check to see what axle and gear upgrades this Jeep has - 37 x 14.5 tires are really large for stock parts, and will put tons of stress on drivetrain, axles, clutches - well, they'll stress everything but the headlights.

A 6" lift also causes a lot of "unintended consequences" - drive line angles, brake line length, really nasty high speed habits. It might be worth having this lift checked out by a local shop to see if they've dealt with all those things. I've seen some really, really, bad lifts. But some are super well done!

And I realize that totally did not answer your question. Not sure how much a new clutch would cost.

Sound like a good base for future build. clutch work can run you about $1K to 1.5K depending on where you live....Mine was $1.5K with clutch and slave cylinder work. Labor here is $108 an hour...so go figure.

six inches of lift does not make a good daily (not to mention it might not even be street legal if ur worried about that) and those 37's are to big for stock axels the dana33 can only handle 35's safety with out possible drive line probs so i would hold out for a mild lifted one with maybe four inches and 33's

Check labor in your local shop, back east in NJ it was $60 an hour. Here in SFO, it 's around $120 plus an hour!!! it is what it is except it or leave it.

Here is the billing details, not sure about your little town though:
-1 New clutch-342.98
-1 New Slave Cylinder-112.18
Labor to install $600...it's pretty much the same every where here. Big city, small garage ,no space = too much labor!!!

That could be turned into something sweet. Although I think it is over priced because a clutch repair costs too much. If you can get it for $2800 go for it.
