Don't know about sound, but I have had a Motorcraft 2150 for about a year and it works fine.

I just replaced the carter with a weber 38 and it does sound good, and improved the performance. You will have to put a fuel pressure regulator on as well they do not like to much pressure, I set mine at 3 psi..

I've been running my weber38 w/o a fpr for a year with no issues.

I've been running a Rocky (Rochester) 2g carb. Don't know about "sound" but they work great. (We always called Rochester carbs Rockys because if someone that knows nothing about them tries to tune them, they get punchy lol.)
