changing engine in a 1995 yj

im considering buying a clean 95 w/ automatic and ac. the owner began a conversuion from a 4.2 carb motor to a 4.0 efi. ran out of time and money so now i want to continue the convcersion. not sure if i should keep going with the 4.0 as i need to do something about the harness etc.

what i really want to do is put a 2.5 in it. question is what else do i have to do ? computer, harness gauge cluster and will the tranny link up to the 2.5 ?

any comments would be appreciated !

Why in the h*ll would y put in a 2.5......? i would continue with the 4.0 instead of scrapping what someone else ALready put money into? just my humble opinion tho

Something sounds strange here. '95s came with injected 4.0s not carbed 4.2s.

Engine Downgrade

I would like to downgrade my engine too. I have the 4.0 and would like to put the 2.5 in it while I'm in the process of completely replacing the frame. Will the tranny bolt-up or would there be an issue with gear ratios in trans or diffs?
Thanks,
-Gary

What are you hopping to gain by downgrading the engine?

More MPG. No need for speed or power...I'll just be driving it to work and back...no off road.

From what I've heard and understand, there is no difference in mpg in the 4l and 2.5l.

Let me save you some money... take the money you need to spend on the swap and go buy a cheap honda.. you will like that better. You need to change everything/or swap stuff to include, t-case gears, new transmission etc, motor mounts computer. heck depending what the gears are in the axles you might get less mpg as the little engine might struggle to move the jeep. Thus, keep the 4.0L and save some coin.

Well you're probably right...(except about the Honda...Although it sounds like you're happy with yours). An engine swap is too much time and money to be worth it. There's over 200K on my 4.0 so maybe I'll look for a low milage replacement. It was just something to consider while I have it completely torn down. Any advice on doing a frame up rebuild?
