I picked up a 2.5L () 106k miles with hardtop/hard doors/half doors, runs and drives for 3k. Sold the full doors and looking to do the same with the top and I'll be around 2.2k.

Well...???? Maybe but let me mention that..

1. Just because its listed on Craigslist doesn't mean it actually exists.

2. The first one needs a transmission and just because that info is given, doesn't mean its the only thing wrong.

Now if someone goes out and buys one of these two Jeeps and gets it road worthy and is into for less than $6000. Good for you. I stick with there are no GOOD cheap YJs out there...As a rule

Eh that first one is a 94 4.0 sahara w a/c full doors and a hard top.... I see cheaper yj's than that all the time... just posted it because it's the hardest to find combo.... If it wasn't green (I hate green) I might have snagged it (although posted 28 days ago it's probably long gone).... trans doesn't concern me in the slightest.... (600 for a rebuild)

I see cheaper yj's that claim to have no issues quite often but I'm a 4.0 hardtop hard door a/c snob lol

A friend just offered an '89 for 50 bucks. You heard right. The frame is rusted completely but she knows I like Jeeps and thought I could part it out if I wanted to deal with it. Since this is a work friend I passed and advised her to sell it her self. Didn't want to mix work and play. I'm sure she could get at least a grand for it just for parts or find someone who wanted to do a frame swap. Other than the frame it actually looked great and the engine ran well. They are out there but it take a lot of looking.

Nice!
I actually have a perfect yj frame stashed away for a future project on just that sort of a deal someday.

I sold my mint condition garage kept 1 owner 1988 YJ that had <100k miles that had a brand new Jasper 2.5L for only $5k. The motor had less that 20 miles on it when I sold it. IMO That thing was the definition of a GREAT jeep.

What is 'good' in your opinion?

How long ago? Anything sold 5 years ago is no longer in consideration. 4 cyl don't bring near the money the 4.0 does and (wrongfully) I was not considering the 4cyl. I did pass on a mint condition black '95 with the 4 banger and auto tranny for $5k but again that was 5 yrs ago

The Jeep posted by steves92 in the #2 post is a parts Jeep. Ad states "bill of sale" (no title).
I'd hesitate to spend $3K for a parts Jeep. I can't imagine the hassle of trying to get a title to an out of state vehicle.
Ad states "no back fees". That might mean something in California or Arizona but not to me in Colorado. Without a clear title, how does one know if there is a lien or not.

It's a parts Jeep.

Good Luck, L.M.

Sold it two years ago. I could of done a 4.0L swap or something but I just didn't like the 88 model year enough to keep it.

I acquired it by trading the original owner for a land rover discovery. (I got the land rover for free.) It sat so long, the original 2.5l that was in the 88 had the piston rings seized to the cylinder walls so when it was started it, the motor clacked very loud but ran okay. So I replaced it with the Jasper motor and sold it to the first guy that had cash in hand. Profited $3500 on it. I'm sure I could of sat on it a bit longer and waited for the right sale but that's not how I do things

Many states don't title vehicles over a certain age... bill of sale MAY be all that is required...

I understand. Raoul mentions that's the case in some New England states.

Since it's an Arizona vehicle being sold in California, I'd be super, extra cautious and if there was any question, I'd pass.

As a point of discussion, a potential buyer could agree to the sale and meet with the seller at the California title clerks office (or wherever California issues titles) and if the State of California will issue a title with the current paperwork it might be a good to go deal. The ad states that the vehicle needs to have an emissions inspection. That adds another layer of complication. Will it pass California emissions or what might it cost to get it to pass.
$3K isn't a cheap price if you have to drop another Grand or two to get it to pass.

I've been buying and selling cars all my life as an additional income source and hobby. If it isn't a "clean deal" the price drops dramatically and quickly.

For a vehicle with clean paperwork, I'd probably pay wholesale price, less any needed repairs at retail. For me, if the paperwork isn't "clean and easy" I'll either pass or buy it as a parts car.

Good Luck, L.M.

I hear ya.... years ago I went to look at /buy a 92 4 cyl 5 speed.... they wanted 2800.... When closing the deal for 2200 I found a title issue.... after saying no thanks and trying to leave half a dozen times the seller accepted $800 for it and I drove it home.... It took a lot of effort but I finally sorted the title out, sold every part except the frame and body for $875 and started building it up.

I hope I don't sound negative.

There are good deals out there, but what I'm trying to convey is that "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

The very first question I ask even before I look at the vehicle is "Do you have a clear title in hand?". If yes, I proceed to examine the vehicle.

THEN....

I want to actually examine the title before I hand over any money.

People make mistakes and others lie.

I've been burned in the past and live by the rule :

"Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me".

I haven't been burned in a long time, but, I've walked away from a lot more vehicles than I've bought.
Sometimes price, sometimes damage and sometimes paperwork. Not every vehicle that's for sale is right for ME.

In Denver, residential blocks usually have alleys up the middle of the block for trash pickup and many garages face the alleys. Driving up & down the alleys is a good way to find unused vehicles.
Looking in farmers fields is another good way.
There is a phone app for Craigslist to notify you if whatever item you're looking for comes up in an ad.

The deals are out there, but you have to be quick and have CASH.

Good Luck, L.M.

Definition of a good deal is "If you believe you got a good deal, then its a good deal.

I paid $7500 for my '91 YJ that I bought in Phoenix last labor day and I assure you it was a great deal.

Just some more data points if I'm understanding what "cheap" is.

https://roanoke.craigslist.org/cto/d...576360984.html

https://roanoke.craigslist.org/cto/d...576135700.html

And I just picked this one up for $5500 a couple weeks ago, my first Jeep. 4.0 5spd, near bone stock, with hardtop, full doors, half doors, and door hangers for the garage. Not a spot of rust anywhere, no filler, but was repainted because PO didn't like the fact that the paint was oxidized a bit, and since this wasn't an original hardtop and he had to get full doors painted anyway, he decided just to do the whole thing. Like @digger531 said, "I believe I got a good deal", so it was a good deal for me.

Oh, and HI! First post. I wanted a YJ for the nostalgia factor. When I was in high school my first job, around 1991, was working at a Jeep/Eagle dealer washing and detailing new and used cars on the lot. Always enjoyed taking the Wranglers off the lot back to the wash bay.

Bought my 1989 (rust free) 20 years ago for $750 from a rich guy, that refused to pay a garrage to replace the slave cylinder. It's the jeep I'm working on now. I wish I could find 50 more.
