Clutch needs repair, how good is this offer?

Hi,

We have a 4 cylinder, manual transmission, '93 Jeep Wrangler which has problems with the clutch. We went to AAMCO to get it diagnosed and they said that the slave cylinder needed to be replaced and that the clutch plates probably needed to be replaced as well, because he could alsmost guarantee that they would be worn.

Their offer to replace it was this:

5.5 hours of labor: 467.50
1 Slave Cylinder: 226.90
1 Clutch Disc, pressure plate, Throw Out Bearing: 286.90

Total: 981.30

Now I don't really have any doubt that he is right about the slave cylinder and the plates, but are these good prices? I'd like to have some more opinions on that before we go ahead and get it fixed.

if it was me i would just replace the slave and wait to see if the clutchs really need replacing bu i'm broke 99% of the time if u got the money then sure at least u will know that u got a good clutch but make sure u ask around town and see if u cant get a better price before u go with one guy

I found a Valeo Clutch kit for $156, which includes the slave cylinder.

Does anyone know the quality of these kind of kits?

The parts prices seem a bit high to me, but I am basing that off of parts for a '97. I think that your '93 probably has an internal slave cylinder and, if I recall correctly from poking around one day, those are more expensive than the external that I replaced on mine. Anyway, you might want to check Autozone's or O'Reilly's websites just to get an idea about how much the parts alone go for. I don't remember my clutch kit having been that expensive either and it seems like there should not be much difference between a '97 and a '93 as far as the clutch disk etc. goes.

On another note, if you do have an internal slave cylinder han you might as well have the clutch disk, pressure plate etc. changed too. They are going to have to drop the trans. to get to the slave and changing the rest of the clutch components while the trans. is out is about a ten minute job. If you decide not to have it done now, and then need to in the future, you are going to have to pay for all of the labor again. If this is the first thing that you have had done to the clutch components then my guess is that, even if the clutch plate etc. does not need changed out right now, it will before too much longer. And, if it is you throwout bearing that goes next, it could take the new slave cylinder with it.

Not trying to talk you into getting parts replaced that don't need to be - just something to consider. I would certainly take a couple minutes, however, to check auto parts stores websites to see what the average prices are for the parts. The labor cost is probably pretty standard and 5.5 hours to do that job is reasonable - never now what sort of trouble they might run into just dropping the trans., it could easily take more than 5.5 hours.

It's an internal slave cylinder indeed. Which is why they said that we might as well replace the clutch components, because they are going to have to open it up anyway. So yeah, you're right on that part Mike.

I say you are right on the money here. If I had my transmission pulled, I would go ahead and change the clutch set; especially if its not been changed.

Well... in a couple of minutes worth of poking around (unfortunately I really don't have much of anything better to do) it looks like those parts prices are indeed off. The general consensus on other threads in the forum is that Luk (but not the Luk Gold) is the way to go. It seems as though Dial-a-clutch is the cheapest (have not looked at their pricing) to have it shipped. I do see that Autozone has a Luk kit for $165. According to their description it has not only all of the clutch components (disk, pressure plate, bearing) but the slave cylinder too. That doesn't seem right since a slave by itself runs $193 on their site. Even together it would still cheaper be than what AAMCO quoted though.

The problem, of course, is that any shop that will install parts that you have brought in are probably going to be reluctant to warrant the result. If something happens in a couple of weeks, the shop will blame that part that you brought in and the part manufacturer will blame the shop for installing it incorrectly and you will be stuck in the middle. You might, however, get the shop to bring down the cost on the parts if you can show them that there are cheaper alternatives to what they are suggesting. Haggling is not my thing so maybe somebody else can chime in with ideas here.

Maybe check around too on some of the threads for other suggestions. If you put "clutch replacement" into the search box you will get a bunch of threads relating to clutches. Not all of them are directly on point to your situation, but there might be a couple of posts in there from people who have yet to see your thread and whose suggestions/ideas will be of additional immediate help.

$165 is close to the $156 for the Valeo kit I found. That one also includes the slave cylinder. I also read that Luk uses Valeo parts a lot, so it's probably the same kit.

I think we'll be going with this one. You do have a point however in the warranty. If the mechanic will mess up, he will blame the parts probably. However, with this kit and a different mechanic, the total cost will be around 500. Half of the AAMCO deal. It's worth a shot, I think.

i am needing my slave, master, bushings, bearings, and clutch replaced as well. i found a package for around 175. and a shop to do it for 300... ( family discount )

Check your local Pep Boys. They are running a special thru March 20. LUK clutch kits, $599 installed for 4 wheel drive vehicles. Replacing your slave cylinder will be in addition.
