Lamborghini is a waste of money. When and where are you really going to drive it? I did work for a highend body shop that had one come in. It had been in a minor fender bender, only paint rubbed off the front bumper. Damage? It was completely broken up behind the bumper, through the core support. $35k to fix it. Like a diamond, an inflated worth on a very common rock. Or Bugatti, $21k for an oil change.

Yeah, no seats worth $7k, lol.

Yeah.. they pretty much have to take the back end of the car apart to do the oil change. YouTube has videos... of course.

Not a Jeep but my craigslist deal was a 2017 John Deere x330 mower with 88hrs for $450.00. May need a new mowing deck. Owner was pissed at the local John Deere dealership for a past warranty repair so he just wanted the mower gone.

It was posted in the ad that the previous owner had done an unsafe SOA, and the new owner didn’t feel safe in it.

With tops going for $900, full doors at $800, wheels and tires at $500, someone got a deal.

Not generally! And I don’t think we need to explain the beauty of having the license plate clearly displayed... someone got a decent deal.

Actually it’s still a mystery to me why people attempt to cover their plates while posting a Craigslist Ad, photos, etc
I mean it’s not as if they aren’t visible to everyone while driving it around everywhere

The sold part of the Ad is puzzling however, as most people just delete the Ad when the item is sold.

I guess if it's a rare car you don't want the undesirables to figure out its location from the tag number??? I really have no idea how you could retrieve that info unless you are in law enforcement tho.

But, you are correct, the only time your tag is hidden is in the ad!

I think it more about sheep mentality. Like when you get the empty cup after ordering your hamburger. Everyone, and I mean everyone rushes to that drink fountain like they are going to die if they sit down first. Everyone else does it so I MUST do it.

I always check a vehicle to see it’s smog history before buying. If it has several fails or looks like it has been bought and sold a lot, I pass.

https://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/V...PubTstQry.aspx

Also you can check the current registration history. If a vehicle has not been registered for 3 years, it can have $1000+ in back fees. A lot of people tell you that it is on non-op, but in fact the registration is expired.

So can a Cali resident buy a used car from one of the other states that do not have emission testing without have to pay a back penalty as you call it?

I advertised a free ride on lawn mower a few weeks ago on CL. I had so many people sending messages I couldn't answer them all and when someone picked up the mower I updated the ad to thank everyone for their interest and that it was gone. Got flagged for removal within the hour.

I have heard that an out of california vehicle can be bought by a resident but they have to jump through hoops. It has to be smoggable, factory or oem equivalent everything, no tampering of smog equipment, no cat delete, no aftermarket intakes, exhaust, turbo, nothing like that. But Indon’t know from experience.

The $300 fee formerly paid by California residents for non-California emissions vehicles being registered in California for the first time (formerly registered out of the state of California) was deemed unconstitutional and rescinded. So to answer your question regarding whether a specific fee is charged for that, the answer is no.

If registration is expired in another state, and the title transfer was not initiated prior to the expiration of the out of state tags, that is another story.

Not sure about the hoops Jon, but you are correct the vehicles need to be smog legal. I have registered a number of out of state vehicles in California. Same requirements for registering a California registered vehicle (including a smog within 60 days of the transfer), plus most vehicles will need a VIN verification by a qualified CHP officer (not all are), or AAA representative qualified in DMV licensing processes.

I inherited my brothers street leagl dirt bike and he never paid the CA registration on it. DMV wanted roughly $1200 in back fees. I thought “F” that, took it to my friends house in Reno and registered it in NV. They didn’t care about CA back fees so it now has Navada plate on it!!!
